Default Strange Happenings

Started the car tonight and drove about a half mile when all h**l broke loss. First I heard some chimes and the radio turned off, then the DIC flashed SERVICE TIRE SENSORS (or something to that effect), then SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING, CHECK GAUGES, then REDUCED POWER flashed. The car seemed to be running ok and I got toa point where I could pull over. I shut the car off and restarted it. Again chimes and the Radio when off, and PULL KEY WAIT 10 SEC appeared on teh DIC. I shut off the engine, pulled the key and waited atleast 10 sec. Started the motor and drove back home without another incident. When I got back from dinner I check the code on the DIC. The only codes where history codes, no current codes. I also checked the voltage on the DIC, it indicated between 13.6 and 14.1. There was one time that the volts were in the 12's before starting the motor but it went up to 13.9 quickly after I started the motor. The car was last run Sunday for about a 1 hour ride up I-83 then 1 hour back. I did not took up the Battery Tender. Also I drove the car for about 15 minutes after I started it with no issues. As far as I can tell the factory CL recall was done. Can anyone help or give me some guidance.

Thanks

Do you want the good answer or the bad answer?

Good answer:

It's the battery. C5's and C6's need a good battery. You can't just look at the volts and tell if a battery is good or not. It has to be tested under load. The computers on these cars freak out if the battery is going or is bad.

Bad Answer:

It's your computer...Which can be caused by a bad battery leaking on it.

Wil thanks. I have a red top optimum which is a month old. Also the car hasn't been run since Sunday nor was the battery tender hooked up.

My Vert had a mind dump a couple of years ago. Same symptoms and it never reocurred. I'd run it for a while and see if it happens again before I worried too much. It could just be some random electrical gremlin.

Alternatively it could be the sign of a battery about to go bad. At least with a Red Top it wont leak and its a no quibble guarantee.

May be worth keeping that battery tender hooked up in any event.

My vert had almost the exact same symptons. Flat-bedded to the dealer, couldn't pull codes or got inconsistent code results. Battery load test was fine. They started pulling and cleaning connectors - problem solved. Haven't seen the problem since (over a year now), I suspect it was a little bit of corrosion.

Good luck!

The Optima is likely NOT the cause of the problem.

Hope the leaking isn't the case.

It seems most certainly related to the electrical system. Maybe a bad ground?

You have Four grounds under the hood. Make sure you check these also. Do a search on the fourm you can fide some pictures and locations. They are easy to see. Look on the top side of your frame under the hood. Two on each side. good luck!

Before that how much was it driven after you put the new battery in?? Were you charging it on the Tender?? A couple weeks of no charging or no driving will let even a new battery go dead...

Wanna bet??? I personally feel that no matter WHAT battery is in our Vettes, if they are not kept fully charged on a Tender, they will go dead and or fail within a short period of time... Unless you drive yours at least a couple times a week!!

My 2 cents...

Let me rephrase then. The fact that it is an Optima and not an Orbital is likely NOT the problem.

Almost the same thing happened to me. Driving along and all hell broke loose. Service this, reduced power etc. This was the prelude to a couple of more incidents like pull key and failure to start. Finally my battery died in a parking lot. Good news was it was just the battery. Put a new one in and zero problems since.
