Security Light
The security light came on today as I was driving home (2002 vert.). It stood on until I restarted the car and is now off. The manual says that if it comes on while driving it could be a serious problem and to get it serviced immediately. Anybody have this happen. Any ideas on what it could be? What will happen if I ignore it? Car drives fine.Any help/ideas will be appreciated.

Happened to me once while driving..... 
When I went to start the car again, it wouldn't start.
I cleaned the little chip contacts on the key, reinserted and it started right up. Never had a problem with it again....

i get the same problem.... turn it off and on and sometimes doesnt go away!
i tried starting it on yesterday and it wouldnt do anything twice..
took key out and re-inserted it and it started right up... looks like ill have to get a key made soon!

First step is to give the key a good clean. Otherwise the VATS kicks in.

My buddy had his security light come on often and over time he realized (and this may sound stupid) that if he put his key in the opposite way he had no issues at all. Not sure if this theory is the fix, but he has never had a problem since. He marked his key to be sure he knew which way it was suppose to come up.

CLEAN the KEY RESISTOR PELLET WITH ALCOHOL
If it is DIRTY it will give you this message and possibly not allow you to start the car. Get a rag or q tip and some alcohol and clean the pellet. BIGHANK

ignition switch or key bad
I had a key that was worn. VERY HARD TO TURN unless you jiggled it.
Had another one which almost left me stranded due to the pellet being dirty. Would try to start the car but it cut off in about 1 second.
Fixes: 1. Replace key and leave old one as a "usable spare"
2. Clean the pellet with alcohol.
If a second key really slides out of the switch you might need a new switch. Once in a while they are available on fleebay at a lower cost.
Don't know if the SWITCH governs the resistance needed in the pellet in the key. Know the BCM knows what the resistance SHOULD BE.
I got a blank 2 sided VATS key with the right resistance on fleebay for about $10. Look there if you need a new key. But if you have only one key and it is worn you might have to pay a ridiculous price at the stealership or some locksmith who will cut you one with your VIN number and proper proof of ID and ownership. I paid a locksmith a couple of bucks to cut the blank key I got from fleebay.
