I have an 01 with a build date of 08/00. I go through a quart about every 2K. I can live with it.

1/2 qt every 6000 miles or so. Most of which is caught in my catch-can.

Oh and yes I'm one of those weird one's who likes to get at or about 3K rpm contributing to my problem. Sorry I like the acceleration and sound.
I don't believe it was a recall. It was a TSB, which is a bulletin to fix a known problem not affecting safety. As you are long out of warranty, it will cost you to have the engine re-ringed, so no, it's not worth it.

I'm still under GMPP for another two years plus. That would probably cover it. My point was, it's only about a quart why tear into the engine for just that?

So they re-designed the rings after May 01 right? Anyone have an idea on the earliest date where it started? May 00 etc? I'm looking at a 2000 and don't want to have this issue.

That is insignificant. Change the oil every 5K and stop worrying.

I'll be happy if I buy this Corvette and don't have to check the oil all the time!! I'll be using it as my daily driver.

Go to a chevy dealership and get a the new design pcv valve it is made for motors that consume oil. and get a catch can so you dont keep recirculating that oil into the intake manifold. PCV is $6.88 and a decent catch is about $100 or so. And hopefully that should help your consumption problems,.. if not switch up to a thicker synthetic oil like amsoil. Something that wont find its way past the rings,.. if you are indeed having ring flutter. Good luck any questions just ask

According to everything I have read the new rings were not fitted to cars until very early production 2002 for LS6, and "a few weeks later" for the LS1. So unless your car was manufactured in 2002 (or later) it won't have the ring fix.

Here's a link to the low down on it all........

Nice article, didn't mean to hijack the thread but it is related to the topic. For some reason you hear about 01's with the problem more than other years, so I thought perhaps there was a bad batch of the already previous design or something. I guess it isn't really an issue with regular driving. I'd like to accelerate fast and rev the engine now and then, but I can't see driving around steadily at high rpm's.

If you have a warranty, then get it fixed. It's not just the loss of oil but
the loss of performance and the buildup of carbon.

A lot of people had this problem and instead of "going through the
trouble" of getting it fixed, they just dumped oil in and then dumped
thousands of C5s off on other unsuspecting second owners.

I had mine done, (changed rings and pistons) and it cured the oil
consumption and piston slap. It took all of 3 days out of my Vette life
and the next owner had a pristine 2001.
GM picked up the tab and I had a great dealer do it.

Oh, and it was an A4 and driven gracefully and I burned a quart in
800 miles. Build date 08/04/2000.

GET IT FIXED!

Ouch, a quart in 800 miles....

Anyone have an idea what it would cost for an out of warranty car? Did they extend the warranty for this item by chance? I'm looking at an 00 with 28K miles.

I must be one of the lucky ones. I have a modded LS-1 motor(98) Cartek 2x heads cam, zo6 intake, etc. and burns 0 oil. I've never had to add any oil between oil changes, even after 6-8 runs at the track!
