For those of you who say your engine burns no oil, are you measuring how much comes out when you drain the oil at oil change time?

I say this because for years I thought my car did not consume any oil since the dipstick always showed full. But I started suspecting that the amount coming out was not as much as what went in, so on my last interval I measured it and discovered that in fact the engine uses about a quart every 5-6k.

I'm basing it on dipstick reading, just seems like when I get close to an oil change it needs a quart.

Age old problem dating back to C4 LT 1.
Knew someone who bought a brand new C4 and promptly went on a trip from DC area to WV. Promptly lost an engine under warranty!

My dad had an LT-1 with no issues, but like anything some are ok and some are not. Interesting to find out if affected some of those too.

99 FRC, based on dipstick reading no noticealble oil consumption. I would guess some oil consumption would be normal for any engine, but what would you consider excessive?

A lot of people had this problem and instead of "going through the
trouble" of getting it fixed, they just dumped oil in and then dumped
thousands of C5s off on other unsuspecting second owners.

I had mine done, (changed rings and pistons) and it cured the oil
consumption and piston slap. It took all of 3 days out of my Vette life
and the next owner had a pristine 2001.
GM picked up the tab and I had a great dealer do it.

Oh, and it was an A4 and driven gracefully and I burned a quart in
800 miles. Build date 08/04/2000.

GET IT FIXED!
I am the second owner. No body told me about this.

I dunno, I would have nightmares to voluntarily hand the vehicle over to chevy service to tear into the engine. If something dies, and I don't have any other choices then maybe. Just imagine the number of broken connectors they will leave, improperly torqued bolts, left over tools and parts, scratches on the fender, fluid spilled all over a near factory pristine engine. You will now have new leaks where they were none before.

Sorry but dealer service is an owner's nightmare. These guys don't give a rat's behind about your vehicle and intentionally damage the vehicle for all kinds of known reasons. Dealer service is the last resort maintenance when you must exercise your warranty.

This whole notion that a dealer is privately owned by someone other than GM is the reason service is so bad at ALL dealers. They don't care, they make huge profits off it and you get screwed by their service, it is just tough for the owner. Try complaining to GM after a bad situation, they will laugh at you. Spend $60-70K for a new one, your only their good friend until you drive it off the lot. Come back with a problem and they will give you the treatment alright.

The only way you would ever been given some sort of guarantee that a dealer service will be right the first time, is if they let you escort the vehicle to the service bay, have the right to observe the technician and have full control over techniques and correcting sloppiness right then and there. You would be able to ensure the body of the vehicle is protected from damage. But that is never going to happen and people will continue to receive marginal if not sloppy work from a dealer servcice facility.

If you got good service from a dealer then you were a very lucky person.

Default correlation between production date and oil consumption

This is an old , highly discussed and speculated topic that has ended up without resolve over with year or what production dates are effected.
I have compilied 17 VIN numbers from '01 Z cars and have early and still inconclusive finds but the trend for oil consuming cars are the early production numbered vehicles.
I'll ask here for anyone to give me the last 6 digits of their VIN number and their estimates for oil consumption. More cars I can get obviously the better the statistic will be. Either PM or email. Better yet I will start a new thread on this subject.

my QSVert is an early '01 ( August '00 build date)
102+ K miles.
Uses less than 1/4 qt per 3K mile oil change.

Default oil consumption and power loss

I had my '02 Z with 22K miles a little over a year. After some "spirited" driving a few months ago I was down a quart of oil and it seems that since then there has been a noticeable loss of power.

Are these related and if so, is there anything I can do to reclaim the power? The oil level appears to be holding steady and I can't seem to duplicate the problem.

Also, if the oil was dropped in the intake, will this cause problems at the next emissions test?
