Like some of the above say, it depends on your long range plans. A significant gear change gives great low end acceleration improvement, so if you go to the track often or get on it a lot that's for you. On the other hand, simpler bolts ons may ease your thirst to experiment, give some improvement, and maintain good highway gas mileage.
I did it all with my '96 Camaro, and now not quick to mess with the rear again. You could also wind up with a rear end drone since there is a lot of "art" (and expense) to setting it up "right".
I'm enjoying my '04 C5 more as a touring vehicle and liking it more or less like it is. Have fun

What ever you do, I don't think you will regret it. But you will feel more power with the gears

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong - You have 2.73 gears in your A4 right now. If you do a switch to 3.15 gears, you won't need to change the TC or reprogram the tune. You should still feel some significant difference for the street - which appears to be your goal. As an aside, you shouldn't affect your warrenty that way. No one can see your gears, but a tech can tell if the vehicle has been reprogramed. That can save you the added costs associated with going higher in gears, which you shouldn't need for the street anyway.

I have 3:15's in my A4. I love them. I still get good gas mileage, 28 on the highway. It has lots of low end power. I think you would be satisfied. Just my .02

I went with the CAI & cat back, then Long Tubes, kept it that way for years then went with 3.42's and a cam.

I'd do it that way again no regrets.

Good luck with your decision.
