i'm thinking of removing my mufflers and replacing them with a piece of straight pipe....has anyone else done this? and what were the results?
good? bad? too much resonance?
With the stock cats in place, it is not as loud as you might think, but it is still pretty authoritative....
I bought some nice Hedmann twin-outlets tips and cut the stock mufflers off, keeping and using the stock "over the axle" flange pipes.
I recently picked up a Z06 Ti catback for her car, and now I have the straight pipes (I call them "Billy-Bobs") just sitting on the floor in my garage.
I would be willing to sell them if you are interested - $75 plus shipping.
I had straight pipes on my setup and it sounded like a NASCAR. I wouldnt recommend it if you have any serious mods. The whole neighborhood will hate you.
Yes I did listen./watch the two clips you posted and it does sound good but is very hard to determine whether or not it is actually louder than the XR-1 Borla setup.
I heard a GTO screaming at a gas station yesterday and I realized i need a louder exhaust. I should have asked him what he had
The XR-1 setup only has 1 muffler, im wondering if I just cut it out if it would be considerably louder.
How loud can you tolerate?
I run straightpipes courtesy of lg longtubes (i guess their called the race version nowadays) no cats, and the borla straight pipe pieces (not even the xr1's).
You'll rattle everything.
You WILL **** off your unenthusiastic neighbors.
You will have to shout to passengers to be remotely heard (I have to scream with the helmet on at WOT in order to be heard by the passenger).
My advice: get it if it doesn't troll the streets much. you'll instantly get muscle car dudes fired up in a good way. do NOT get this on a daily driver.
I run the factory cats to staright pipes & a x-pipe and it sounds great, i do feel guilty leaving late at night though because it is fairly loud my only other mod is a blackwing, people always think i have way more work done because it sounds so mean.
I also agree I wouldnt get this on my daily driver even though it's tolerable in 6th

Hi 97C5driver -
I would think that it is very similar to the XR-1 - although this setup has no mufflers at all - not even a "bullet" in the system.
Rather than start with the XR-1, why not pick up a free c5 castoff catback and weld in straight pipes? Then you are only out the money to have the pipes fabbed ($50 or so) and you can go back to the XR-1 if you want.

I had practically the same setup on my C4...
-The neighbors did not like when I got home late or had to leave early in the morning....they told me on several occasions.
-Don't plan on holding a conversation in the car, makes going through the drive though interesting and you need a really good stereo....in other words you can't hear diddly over the exhaust.
-It also tends to attract the LEO's with their ticket books for noise violations. ... four times
