I know we have stickys, but it seems to me that All C-5 owners should be required to read about the common problems {on the CF}such as column lock, fuel gauge and corroded grounds before they use one full tankful of gas.
Mine locked up on me... i didn't have to get it towed... i just ripped HARD on the wheel left and right for a minute - then put the key in and tada it works! From then on i didn't take the key out until i had the CLB installed.. Once you take the key out of the ignition it'll relock, and may be stuck for good... ( i left key in Off position, and locked car w/ Key Fob...)
I'd recommend raging on the wheel to free it, then just leaving the key in the ignition in the off position for a couple days... (in a garage if you can...) then get CLB installed and you're done.
Note: I'm pretty sure you can not install CLB if the steering wheel is locked... so even if you get the CLB you'll need to free the wheel... which may mean trying the "Rage" method i mentioned... hehe
Yep!!! the old column lock dog bites another victim. Try turning wheel hard from side to side if this doesn't work you might have to have it hauled. GM fixed this very common problem under warranty for us y2k guys. I know there is a CLB that you can have installed to fix this problem once and for all.
this forum is great, i went to the dr and when i left my column locked up and im thinking what in the ****? well i called a friend and had them log in to the forum and read this thread. i turned the wheel hard left and then hard right, then put the key in and it unlocked, thank god.
now im headed to corvettes of houston to get the CLB
Just did mine, about 30 min, no more BUZZZZZZT when you put the key in. I did this while I was installing a switch for the antenna. I'm still looking for a 1/4 hole switch tho
Made the mistake of taking mine back to stealership when I gto the recall. Left it for two days got it back and a week later it locked up on me, called the stealership and they said tow it to them, they would not pay the tow bill. Nor would they admit it was their problem. Funny thing they didn't carge me to correct it.
