A new owner on the Brit Corvette Forum posted up the following question. Its not a problem I've ever seen. Can anyone provide an explanation?
"Just been out in my c5 and for some strange reason "brake before shift" came up on my display as I was driving, went away as soon as i touched the brake but came back a mile or so down the road. seems to be tied to either hard acceleration or a bump in the road which kind of points to a loose wire or similar. Was wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem?"
It sounds like a failure of the interlock feature when shifting out of Park. Maybe the sensor that tells the computer which gear is selected? I'm sure that Bill could answer it in a second.

It's a problem known to happen when you drive on the wrong side of the road. The whole brake and traction control system gets confused and keeps instructing the driver to tap the brakes. It's a safety system that's built in, rarely seen or experienced this side of the pond.

I just put a new computer in my 98 c5 and the car was converted from an automatic to a manual trans...the vin# is used for flashing the new computer and as far as the vin# goes its still an auto trans car im guessing thats why my car has the brake before shift light problem lol

Sounds reasonable. Might want to PM Bill Curlee and ask for some advice.
Perhaps it's an intermittent VSS (vehicle speed sensor) - if the vehicle speed was reported as zero even though car is moving it might display that message.
Hello everyone, speaking from France drive on the same way as you ahah
i have the same problem on mine, I replace brake switch but it appears again
and for me the problem is more important because I rebuild my trans with a good rebuilder Who often rebuild some of my Vette I have. And 50 miles after the trans failed again.
He rebuild a new time with a big system of cooling bypassing the radiator. And it failed again.
We rebuild it 5 time and each time same problem
New OEM torque converter
new differential because we think it have an hard point make my trans bad
lines very clean
all the rear of the trans is each time completely burnt. Now I stop before the problem when I see the temperature rising.
we think the problem is electrical and maybe this message brake before shift appearing sometime when I drive on the city so maybe the problem with my trans is related..
