Default "Service Active Handling...."

Kinda' long thread - '04 Z , 50k miles, 2 weeks ago cruising down the highway at 72 mph, "Service Active Handling Soon..." message appeared in the DIC. It has been happening almost daily now and I also noticed the cruise control disengaging on it's own now - about 5 times in a 2 hour trip to LRP this w/e. The cruise disengagement doesn't appear to happen when the "Service Active Handling...." message appears, but I bet the two are related. As a test, I turned off Active Handling/Traction Control and the "Service Active Handling.." message appeared during my trip this morning, but I did not lose Cruise Control.
There's 1 TCS DTC code (C1288-H - Steering Position Sensor Circuit) and a bunch of "Lost Communication with..." codes in the IPC system (U1016, U1040, U1064, U1088, U1160 & U1176 - all History codes).
I first thought of a wheel sensor, since cruise control was affected, but with all of these Loss of Communication DTCs could it be a wiring or plug interface issue...???
Any insight would be appreciated.
Fred

The C1288 is the problem ... the Uxxxx codes have nothing to do with it.

When the EBCM senses a problem with the steering wheel position sensor (SWPS) it posts the C1288 and does the following ...

1) disables Active Handling
2) commands the PCM to drop Cruise Control if engaged

If you turn OFF AH/TC, then even if the C1288 problem is sensed, the EBCM does not command the shut off of cruise control.

Check the wiring where it connects to the SWPS and the connectors at the EBCM. If no obvious problems there, you most likely need to replace the SWPS>
