I've never seen anything like it. It was also cracked (came off in my hand when I tried to remove the bulb).
Whadaya think, random lamp failure, or an indication of a transient elec system problem? (Not that I really think there's a chance it's related, but it went out the first time I used the left turn signal after I installed the HID kit)

Hmmm, think that might do it? It has rained here every day this month. And it was a bit difficult to remove (reminiscent of removing bulbs corroded due to moisture).
Maybe keep an eye out for condensation in the housing after it rains?

Its quite a common problem. If you have signs of charring around the lamp holder that will be it.
The lights are on all the time if you have DRLs activated. They have been known to burn the housing. I've seen a few pics of cracks and some fairly dramatic failures. With the lack of sapce down there you need to make sure the bulb holder goes back in tight and seals the housing.
If you find a crack, most guys use some silicon sealant and seal the cracks and then problem over.
