So I got a DIC code and "service vehicle soon" message a few weeks ago and I looked it up on this forum to find out about it. After searching the archives, I found 5 or 6 good references which all pointed to a failed position sensor (its not very typical but it does occasionally happen, especially to an 11 year old vehicle). So I ordered the part and it came today.
I have a set of service manuals so i referenced them first but they take me on a wild steering position sensor hunt. It says i have to remove the steering wheel, steering column, knee bolster and then finally get to the position sensor (and there about 500 bolts and special tools required to do the job).
My question is: is there an easier way to do this than removing the entire column assembly from the vehicle. I know these service manuals will get the job done, but in reality, there is usually a much simpler way than how they go about it.

I had this happen on my old '99 and the only way to replace the sensor that I know of is to remove the column. You would think that the sensor would be a two-piece unit, and if it was there would be no real issue. But the thing is a full ring and only slides over the bottom of the column. You can do it yourself, but it does take some time - a full afternoon or most of a weekend.
