I am about to put 18 x 9.5 C5 Magnesiums on all 4 corners of my 89 because I am tired of having different sizes on front and back and can't rotate.
Can anybody tell me if it is necessary to put ugly stick on weights on the outside of the rim like the factory insisted on applying? Can't I just put them on the inside of the rim like aluminum wheels????
Every wheel I ever saw from Chevrolet had them on the outside of the spokes. Always thought that was stupid, but thought surely they did it for a reason.... Guess Not!
Yes, it's possible...the caveat is they may not be as secure if the double sided tape fails and they may not provide as accurate of balance as those crimped on the outside edge. This came from DISCOUNT TIRE when I had my new wheels done on a new truck.

If someone crimped wheelweights onto the edge of MY magnesium rims I'd whack 'em up the side o' the head with a 2x4. I'm very new to Corvettes and mag rims but I very much doubt that they're meant to have clip-on weights marking their coating and gouging their soft metal.
I just had a mag rim replaced yesterday as a dealership tire-changing person took a chunk right out of one of my wheels while inserting new TP sensors. And yes they bought me a new wheel.
The tire tech (I would not allow the job to be done at the dealership and risk another rim) lovingly stuck weights to the rim's inside.
I doubt that any car enthusiast likes the looks of wheel weights on the outside, but that's the manner in which 99% of manufacturers ship their vehicles from the factory.
Whether it's cheaper, faster or whatever, that's the way it's done. It might be the manufacturer is more concerned about function that aesthetics.
My Z16 still has the oem wheel weights on the outside of the polished forged wheels. Removing them now would leave the impressions in the clear coat anyway.

hotwheels - sorry for the confusion. I meant they have small weights that are about half the width of regular stick on weights that the factory put on the outside of the spoke... Its hard to describe if you haven't seen them. They're still flat, facing up towards the center lugs, but they're on the "pretty" side of the spokes instead of on the inside. These wheels don't have the rim guard ridge like most factory wheels do.
All Throttle - You've got yours mounted just like I was planning on doing, just wanted to check before I had it done.
This should help........OEM from our 2000 when new.
Double sided tape, same you see in my pics above except like said above.....on the pretty side of the spokes
Best to use fishing wire and rubbing alcohol on a course rag to get the sticky stuff left.
Once you do a few, you can also use an xacto knife without chipping the paint.
I have done enough now I can use a box cutter
Just take your time and work the weights back and forth with your fingers as you break the adhesive say 1/2 way
