Default Question about Ashtray

I have never been able to keep the little secondary door covering the ashtray closed. A friend of mine suggested I was missing the little metal ashtray that the door would probably clip to. I bought the car new and it wasn't there ... I have never smoked in the car so it wasn't a big deal. But, I have always wondered why they put the little door there if it didn't stay closed.

It should stay closed. I think you are missing the spring.

I just picked up an 01 and it stays closed, and I am a smoker, but since the car has never been smoked in, I'm gonna keep it that way, I smoke in my C4. I would think you could get that from Chevy at a cheap price.

So if you were to put out a cigarette you would just snub it against the plastic and not into a metal ashtray that could be removed and emptied. That doesn't make sense

I think there might be a little more to this. My spring keeps the little door open all the time too. The spring is not missing, maybe it's on wrong? And it's always been that way as my car has not been smoked in since new.

The "inner" metal ashtray door is designed to open when the outer (plastic) door is opened. It closes and stays closed only when you close the outer (plastic) door. The Metal door is not designed to be closed while the outer door is opened.

That's correct. The outer door controls the inner door.

So then ... the ultimate dumb question ... if the little door can't be closed when the big door is open ... why have the little door at all?

Its metal, its keeps the outer door from melting.

Wanderer, I have the same problem only mine worked until the dealer replaced the factory radio. When I brought it to their attention, they tried to charge me $400 to replace the ashtray as it has something to do with the door staying closed.

I'm in the process of filing a small claims case against them for the cost of the repair and the parts and I'll be fixing it myself. My labor rates are higher than the dealers so I plan on sticking it to them. I no longer will deal with dealers as they're just a bunch of a-holes and couldn't figure their way around a box of Play-Skool toys.

Doesn't the actual ashtry part come out? IIRC, from changing my shifter, there is a screw behind it that you have to remove to remove the forward console.

$400 for an ashtray ...? They never cease to amaze me. I agree ... do the small claims. A judge will probably be very sympathetic. Good Luck.

I don't smoke in the car so I have never really checked to see if it does. I was going to start checking out links about removing the console, if it is removable, I would assume screws are under it. Or I guess I could go out to the garage and check it out myself. well maybe after a few more cups of coffee.

...so that ashes dont fly out of the ashtray, the inner door "seals off" the ashtray itself.. Its a stupid design that it cannot be closed on its own.

They put a lot of time and effort designing and building this one small item, yet 10 years later they can't solve the CLB problem. Go figure

My 2 cents. I just bought a new ashtray lighter assm and radio bezel. The door on my ashtray stays up the metal door closes when you close the cover to keep the butts and ashes from coming out while close also the help to hold them in the tray during removal.
