A big thanks to DeeGee on this great write up. I just completed this fix and it saved me alot of money. I didnt know this could be done and was about to replace the entire antenna unit.

Nice write up, DeeGee. Very useful for those that have power antennas.

Great writeup!!
It works for other GM cars as well. I just followed these instructions to change the antenna mast in my 1996 Oldsmobile. It's the exact same thing as what is pictured in this thread!
Funny thing, even the part is the same. In the Ebay auction it said the mast also fits several years of Corvettes.

Back when I had a car with a retractable antenna, I was given a tip to keep it problem free. I was told to lube it whenever I washed the car with some oil that is also used to lube the rail that a print head travels back and forth on inside a printer. I forget the type of oil it was but it was specific in that it didn't attract a lot of dirt. It reminds me of regular oil and synthetic in how different it was from regular lube. I never had an issue out of that antenna.

Yea, but this is one of those very few times that I would go against the manual, and its only because I have direct experience with this. The antenna I lubed was purchased in 1988. It still works. You have to use the correct lube or you'll just gunk it up and it will quit working. Like I said before, you have to use a silicon based lube made for printer rails.

Thought I'd bump this as it came up in another thread.
For any Vert owners who are new to the Forum and have a bad antenna

I just had to read my own write up. I snapped off my antenna on the conifer tree last week. I got a replacement from Laynlow on E Bay amazingly quickly

Ever seen or heard of an antenna motor that won't shut off, either after the antenna is fully extended or when its fully retracted?
Mine even continues to run after you pull the keys out of the ignition. I pulled the fuse for RDO/ANT to stop the motor, to prevent my battery from draining.
Frustrating.
