I went to Reliable Chevy in the Dallas area to look at their used C6's and to test drive a manual to see how it compares to my C5. I explained this to the salesman. His response was there is no comparison. I asked if I could take one out and he said no, their policy is that the vettes can only be taken out if the buyer is very serious. What a load of
My next vette used or new will be bought elsewhere.
Pull up in your new one from another dealer and show him how serious you are. A friends wife went to look a a new car and the dealer said for her to come back with her husband, he didnt want to sell it to her on by herself. The husband and wife went to another dealer and bought 3 brand new cars and trucks and drove them to the other dealer to show how serious she was. paid cash for them all too
Your story remotely reminds me of when I went to test drive an 03 mn6 vette at a used car lot...Even though I was dressed nice the owner was apprehensive about letting me test drive it. No harm no foul. Eventually he did let me go on a short test drive...you should have seen his face when I drove by with my $500 work van I was driving at the time and I honked and waved... (I had to park it 2 blocks a way since I knew if he spied my $500 work van before the test drive there was no chance in hell I would be allowed to breath on a mustang let alone drive a vette).
I was dead serious about buying a vette but just not his.. (03 for $28k-- HUD not working).
I tried my luck at the car dealer thing for a year and a half. I had a $33k porsche for sale at the time and I would't even let a dentist test drive it until "we were closer in negociations". When a musician from LA drove down to see it and after he told me "he just sold his house" and only after we started talking price I knew I had my buyer so I let him drive it. I did feel a little weird telling someone 20 years my elder that they couldn't test drive my car (I was 22 at the time).
It's understandable since as a business owner I see the way people "test" items on display before buying them...
All I know is that in retail-- no matter how many years experience you have-- you can't be even 75% sure the person that just came through the door is a serious buyer or a waist of time by just looking at them.
what a bunch of crapola.
You show up in a C5 and they won't let you drive a C6.
I would be walking out of that dealer now. The only reason I would ever return would be to show him my new C6 I purchased elsewhere.

Amazing... How many sales generate from this conversation...
Salesman - "Can I help you folks?"
Folks - "No thanks, we're just looking"!
Salesman - "OK, let me know if you need something or any questons answered..."
Folks a little while later - "Tell us more about this car..."
Later that day, the next day, the next week or even months later, they will buy a car. Maybe not that car, from that salesman or from that dealer but they will buy a car at some point. If you treat them with respect and treat them properly, they'll deal with you if you make them feel comfortable.
Or you can be a Dickweed like this dealer and MAKE SURE they do not return...

It's really not so black and white. If someone was a car dealer and a few teenagers came in and wanted to test drive a vette...there might be a chance they would run it hard and you'd be hearing tire screeches a mile away...When they bring the vette back I bet the oil pressure needle would still be pegged.

My car was purchased by the original owner from Frank Parra Chevrolet in the Dallas area.
I was waiting for my alignment to get done in service about 6 months ago, and was ogling the C6s. A salesman comes over and says , wanna take it for a test drive? I told him no, I didnt want to waste his time since I was waiting for my C5 to get done. He says, I dont care if you waste my time.....wanna go for a test drive? Just then I see my car go out for a test with the tech and I said, I guess not this time.
He was an older guy, totally cool.

There are situations where I can understand why a salesman wouldn't give someone the keys. But I am 31, drive a C5 and was dressed nicely. My next car will be most likely be a vette, and test driving a C6 is part of the decision making process. I won't be wasting my time at Reliable anymore. Later on I drove a C6 at Huffhines. Much better experience.
Bah, there are MANY Chevrolet dealerships in DFW, just go down the highway to the next one that actually cares to sell a car. The commission on that car would pay his bills for a month or so, so it's his loss not yours.
Hey Armadillo, I used to live in Cedar Hill for a few years. It's grown ALOT recently. Ok back to bashing the salesman
I sell cars and I don't like to let people just try high end cars. I try to find out why your there, if there really is no chance your going to buy a particular vehicle then why should we put miles on a car your not going to buy, I don't think it's fair to the vehicles next owner. If you were shopping for a C6 and you knew it went out on a bunch of test drives where it was likely run hard everytime because people wanted to "see what it could do", would you still want that car, I wouldn't. Sorry if this upsets people, but you should only test drive cars when your serious about making a purchase in the very near future. In fact I hate the phrase "test drive", it should be a "confirmation drive" when your looking at a high end car, meaning you have the ability and desire to purchase the car.
I had just the opposite experience when I bought my current C5. Went to the dealer and was offered a test drive. Drove it for a while and when we returned the salesman ask if I would like to take it home for the weekend and bring it back Monday. I declined. It was obvious that they really wanted to sell the car and were ready to deal. Went home and researched competitive prices and went back on Monday and made an offer which they accepted.

Not to defend this dealer - but I wonder how many "joyriders" come in and want to test drive Corvettes with absolutely no intention of buying one. I'm not saying that describes you - but as a dealer, you have to protect your expensive merchandise.
If I was serious about buying a car and was told - "sorry no test drives" - I would walk out too.
