To start i have a 99 vert with 19000 miles. Today i pulled it out of the garage and noticed that there was a spot of oil on the ground under where the rear end would be. It might not be oil but it felt like it. Could this be the rearend leaking? Is that usually costly to fix? Is it something that can wait a couple months when im not driving it as much?
I'm not a mechanic either. But I have heard and read on this forum
that the early C5's had a leaky r/end problem and it certainly should be checked out. After all, it's only going to get worse.............Seems kind of amazing that it would start leaking with only 19K on it.

Maybe not so amazing. It's an 8-year-old car. With only 19K on the clock, it has definitely been sitting for awhile. Seals dry up, gaskets crack. Could be any number of problems that arose from non-use.
It's failrly common and I had this fixed very early in my Vette's life. Luckily I was still under warranty as its a strip down at the back end and not something I'd like to tackle.
The other thing to check is that its not transmission fluid venting. I had a service and the tech overfilled the transmission. it vented after a few miles and showed a few drips until they took some fluid back out.

Sounds like it could be the rear differential seal leaking, but it could also be something like the rear of the tranny gasket leaking too. If you can get up under the rear of the car, try and see where the oil is coming from. Not sure of the cost since I had mine fixed under warranty. Good luck.
