I've bought all of my OPTIMA batteries from COSTCO. The price has gone up in the past few months though (approximately $140).
You're thinking the same as I did when I bought my '04 Z16. The oem battery was still good and not leaking, but I prefer the OPTIMA batteries.
Stand by for the OPTIMA naysayers...
I don't think there's been a leaky battery problem since Delco changed them back in, let's say, 2001?
I would say the "leaky battery" issue gets far more press on this forum than is warranted. There's a lot of talk about it, but you never seem to run into anyone who has had it happen to them.
However, there is at least a small risk and there's nothing wrong with paying a little extra for an AGM battery and having the piece of mind that it won't happen to you!

The one I just replaced was leaking from the top covers... it was an Interstate battery

oh, was that the date? i didn't know.
mine is an aftermarket car battery.
i think it's an O'Rilies or something. it's three years old and i have run it dead once. other than that it seems fine.
do you think i should replace it.
how often should you replace a battery in a corvette?
Doesn't the 2004 have a top post? Where's it going to leak from?
Everything I have read about leaking battery's had to do with side mount. Thats why GM went to the top mount, with special cables on the 04" It is impossible to over tighten the 04' cables, you would destroy them. David

If you live in a hot dry climate (as I am in AZ or you are in TX), or do not maintain the battery on a float maintenance type charger during periods of prolonged storage...a typical lead acid battery could last you 3-4 years. But, each severe discharge of a battery shortens its lifespan.
I just read an article that said that a typical battery loses 50% of its total charge in as little as 12 days of storage/non-use in modern electronics laden vehicles.
In AZ, I've had a lead acid battery go out in 2 years...not so with any of the OPTIMA batteries I've had and maintained on a float maintenance charge (BATTERY TENDER or CTEK)...they should last twice as long (someone will argue that, they always do... ).
My longest lasting OPTIMA went for 7 years and was still going strong after that with the new owner of that car.

I had the original "leaky" OEM Delco that never leaked. Guess I was lucky.
I replaced it after 5yrs, 11mos of trouble-free service. Which was the first time I ever had to throw a charger on it. Felt 6 yrs was pretty good life and decided to replace it at that time. Current one, DieHard, is 2yrs + with no problems.
I've always replaced batteries, in any vehicle, just before they go bad. No problems, I wouldn't replace it. Just keep an eye on it, like anything else, and maintain it.

Considering the stakes (not to mention potential $cost$), this matter has not received unwarranted press, especially from those that actually did experience a leaking Delco battery. As a matter of fact, the problem was so widespread for several years that GM started using AGM (sidepost) batteries in new Corvettes even before the top post design was finally adopted. I agree that the use of an AGM battery is good insurance.
Oh, and BTW, you just ran into someone who experienced a leaker.
