[Z06] Got One: Z16 option
My Dad has had Vettes since late '89. I remember when he bought the first (of course I remember, I was 15 and it was a Vette!). The car was a 1990 coupe with the restyled interior, black metallic paint (kinda looked brownish in the wrong light), 6-speed (or 5-speed I don't know) and a black interior. He sold it a few years later for a used '90 Carrera 2. Then, in '97 he got one of the first C5s in town. Again, this was black coupe with a black interior. In late '02, he got the millennium yellow '02 z06 which he still has. In '03 he added a blue auto/convertible to the stable. Last year had an '06 C6 for about 2 weeks. He didn't like the steering and didn't feel right about the suspension either. I guess he was right about the suspension because Chevy revised it for '07. So, my car will make the family's sixth Vette.
By the way, the car I'm selling isn't too shabby either. I know what I know about Boxsters now, but somebody is going to love the Anniversary Edition Boxster S w/ 16k miles I'm selling. I bought it after owning an NSX for about 4 years because the NSX was just too expensive to maintain. Thinks like $2500 clutch replacements are hard to overlook. On paper, the '04 Boxster S Anniversary was a better car than my '95 NSX since the boxster had a more torquey engine, a better power to weight ratio, better brakes, a more solid chassis, classier interior, fatter rubber all packaged in a roadster. In reality, I believe the Boxster was slower, had less effective road feel, a more rubbery transmission and, most of all, provided a less exciting experience.
I've driven my Dad's Z06 several times including a track day at Texas World Speedway. And, it's a great drive.
The things that kept me away from a Z06 when I sold the NSX were...
1. The interior of the Vette is (how do I say this nicely?) ... NOT exotic
2. There's something about the nose of the C5 Vettes that's never been right to me (styling wise). I think Chevy tried to make it more angular on the C6, but it just came out cartoonish.
3. The engine is in the wrong place.
Okay, so I bought the Boxster S and just about hated owning it. I was
1. Afraid to ruin the limited edition cocoa brown full leather interior
2. Afraid to break something that would cost more than I make in a month (or 3)
3. Annoyed by how slow the car seemed
4. Annoyed by the sport seats (standard on the Anniversary) and the cramped interior... I'm about 250 lbs. (as a side note, the NSX had great room)
5. Annoyed that I didn't purchase a car that had the one thing the NSX really was missing, a powerful engine.
I had been considering supercharging the NSX for a long time. It's about a $10k expense. That would have made the car a lot more fulfilling. Unfortunately, every time I got close to making that choice I had some other BS $3k problem or maintenance issue come up.
So, a few weeks ago I drove my Dad's Z06 and the rest is history. You guys all know how satisfying the LS-6 engine is to drive. Even though the engine is in the wrong place, the Z06 just plain handles. It's just about perfectly damped and sprung for a road car. F1 cars may be mid-engined, but that's because they are "spec" cars. A spec car that's mid-engined will always outperform one that isn't. If you created a front engine F1 car with 65% more power, it would leave all of those mid engine cars in the dust on every track. That's kind of my comparision between the NSX and the Z06. The Z06 has a great exhaust note (even stock). I upgraded the exhaust on my NSX, and that was pretty sweet sounding. On the Porsche, if I put on an aftermarket exhaust, it would have just ruined the resale value.
Anyway, I'll know how the inspection goes tomorrow. I'm getting compression tested as well to make sure the engine is in good shape. We'll see how it goes and I'll keep you updated.

I've got just over 21K on mine and I need to replace the fronts due to tread wear on the inside shoulders, common on these cars. The rears are good tread wear but are getting old and brittle - don't quite have the bite a new set will.
Good luck!

Of course, I might get lucky. It was only a dealership inspection done out of state that said I should get new tires and a new battery. They might have seen $$$ knowing I had no chance to inspect the tires or do a battery check myself.
Crap, now I don't know if I trust the inspection. If they told me the engine was falling out and I didn't yet own the car, why the heck would I buy the car? I most certainly wouldn't give them a dime to repair an engine in a car I was about to buy.
Well, that's not true ... I do have a inspection checklist FAX from the dealership with their names on it. (The dealership that did the inspection is not the dealership I'm buying from)
Ok, I'm really rambling now. It's been a long week. Next week will be longer because the car is supposed to ship out on Tuesday!
Do you have any tricks or places to find a good car deal? Obviously, I will look everywhere under every rock to find what you did.
Congrats on the perfect ride and great price!
