What is average battery life? My 00 would not start yesterday, solenoid would chatter and nothing else.
I have it on a trickle charger now, but suspect it is
time for replacement.
I wonder if it will hold the charge, would a battery tender be a good investment on the old battery, or
just replace it.
My God, if that is the original battery you have done well. My OEM battery in my 01 is still going strong after 6.5 years. Currently, the best AGM (leakproof) battery you can get is the new Sears AGM, although it weighs and costs a ton ($180). For a lead-acid battery such as your OEM unit, it's tough to beat AC Delco Professional batteries. They have a 50 month free replacement warranty - best in the industry. These batteries have been redesigned for much stronger terminal joints and case integrety. To be doubly safe, however, just place a $5.00 Ecklers acid matt underneath.
If your original battery lasted 7 years, you may not need a maintenance charger. They are great for infrequent drivers, though.
Older batteries used to max out at about 3 years. Newer ones have improved. I would venture to say you could plan on about 4 to 5 years on the average. You did very well.
