I have a freind who wants to buy a comm. Z06 vette because loves the colour combo stripes and limited number built. Problem is he has had problems with back and left leg, his ability to drive drive stick is next to nil, he wanted me to get feedback on if he could buy one and swap out the stick for an automatic transmission. Is this possible to do without any or little modifications with a G.M. trans. or an aftermarket trans. Thank You for any valid imput.
That is probably not going to work. Buy regular fixed roof or even regular hatch, put on Z06 shocks, sway bars and springs. Change the tires and up the HP to 400+, and maybe even put on the rear ducts.
Probably easier and cheaper than trying to change out the transmission. You can make it look like a Z06 and pretty much go like a Z06....
Also if he has back and leg problems..can he even get in and out of a vette on a regular basis?
Dont know about the other guys, but because the car is so low, I have to almost fall in and out of the car.....
it will be a weekend car only and it has to be 2004 comm. edition. its the clutch that bothers the leg not so much the in and out. He still drives and we have many friends with vettes. Does anyone have an approx. cost? or someone to call for info? we are in ontario Canada.
I have seen Z06 cars drag racing with slush-a-matics. So, I would guess somebody offers this mod. I agree with everyone else though, it will not be cheap. Good luck.
Isn't the special edition also available in the regular coupe? If he loves the look and limited numbers, but needs an auto, that would be the way to go...
yes but wants the Z06 power and performance and look without having to mod the car too much wants to keep it as original as possible but finds it to be interesting to maybe have a one off automatic Z. t.y.
If anyone knows if it can be done, I'm certain they would have some idea of difficulty and cost.
Here's the minimum issues you'd have to deal with .....
* console and shifter mechanism
* PCM - reprogram or replace
* wiring harness (this is probably the biggest potential problem) - add wiring for PCM to monitor/control the tranny
* remove/replace trranny
Since the base platform supports both transmissions, physically swapping the trannys should be a "no brainer" .... the wiring and PCM issues are probably the most difficult problem.
personally i think his reasoning is kinda flawed here... he wants a comm edition, because its a rare, low production number car; but has already planned on making a fairly large modification to the car that will probably massivly reduce its resale value, and overall worth.
i think he would be MUCH better off buying a FRC that is already equipped with an auto, and then adding on all the Z06 goodies and carbon fiber hood.
thats just my personal opinion. either way, i hope he ends up with what he is looking for.
and i guess in answering your question, it absolutely IS possible to convery to an automatic. it would just be extremely pricey.
You cannot get and FRC auto... all FRCs come w/ the 6-speed and Z-51. This swap has been done numerous times. Have him send the car to ECS or out to Rodney at RPM.
It will leave like a stock car BTW RPM has also swapped the new 6-speed auto into a C6Z.
Thanks for the website and opinion blackZ06 i will pass it on to him, as for the frc they only came 6spd, they were the base for the Z06. Also they are 3-4 years older and dont have the power and distinction of the Z. He likes the colour and the stripes that go with the 04. he doesn't plan on selling it unless something drastic happens and in that case I would probably buy it from him.
