I've recently noticed my engine temp climbing in stop n go traffic. Temp runs up to 228 degrees. Freeway cruise 75MPH ambient air @ 85 and engine runs 196-198 degrees. Temp rises fairly quickly after getting off the freeway. Is this normal? I never paid attention to the engine temperature before but on a trip to Vegas the engine temp climbed into the 230's while on the strip in traffic. 2004 MN6

Mine behaves about the same, if I run the air however I do not see temp creep as much. Just to be safe check for debris in front of the radiator since these cars are vacuum cleaners.

First thing I checked was for loose debris on the condenser...a few bug remnants but nothing much. Flushed the condenser coil face with water and compressed air...no difference in temp readings though.

Look for crap in the radiator. You have to look way up at the top. The part you can see easily is the bottom 1/2 - 2/3, the top portion is what collects grass, leaves, paper, etc. It doesn't take much.

230 degrees is within the normal operating range for the LSX engines, though usually occuring in areas with higher ambient temps than 75 degrees. Here in Texas I would say everything is fine.

You might consider a lower temp thermostat along with reprogramming you cooling fan start-up temp.

Good point, as running the AC will keep the cooling fans on which helps significantly in stop and go traffic.

In stop and go traffic, that is not an unusual temp.

Those temps may be in the acceptable range, but I suppose each vehicle may be slightly different. I've never seen anything higher than 205 with my A/C running. And even then it hits the 205 mark and immediately starts back down first stopping at 201 then back to 198 this all while sitting in traffic in hot summer conditions.

With your A/C off, your going to have to let it heat up until it reaches the first fan turn on point which I believe is about 229-230. Once that happens after a minute or two it should start cooling off.

If you have auto air just set it so the temp is what you want that way the fans are running as designed and keeps the coolant temps consistent without those wild variations.

Had the same concern when sitting in traffic for 45 minutes and had nothing better to do than play with my DIC. Soon as I started moving it lowered back the range you mentioned.

I always run the A/C in auto. After reading much about lower t'stats and reprogramming the fans I became concerned about seeing the high temps. Realizing the cooling fans are staged to turn on in the 220+ range I was wondering what, if any, benefit there is to those who are running the lower t'stat and reprogramming the fans. With little air movement in stop and go traffic the fans are the only source of significant air movement. Does anyone know what the cut-out point is for the fans? I'm thinking the factory t'stat is set around 195 and appears to be working when cruising on the highway. Can someone confirm the factory t'stat setting?

Thanks

Just did a long road trip....oil stayed at 208 and coolant at 192. However, in town the tempertures are in line with what you are getting.

The corvette manual says that the car will warn you if it gets near 325 degrees.

In traffic those are pretty normal temps. Nothing to worry about. if you have a stock stat the car should never run less than 195 when warmed up. If it does, it must be relatively cool out.
