Are there any products out there to replace the stock antenna on my C5 (non-powered antenna)? Something that's plug and play? I'm not a big fan of the windows units and I don't want to do any body work. All I want to do is replace this loooooong dang antenna with something shorter and preferrably as thin as the stock antenna. Can I cut this thing down perhaps?
Have you tried search using keywords "shorten antenna" or similar? This gets discussed on a regular basis.
You can buy shorter antennas that thread on from many of the site supporting vendors...main menu page, column to the left. Look at PFYC, MID AMERICA or ZIP PRODUCTS. R-D RACING also sells a very popular black shorty antenna. It's billet aluminum with a black powder coated finish, about 3 1/2" tall.
You can cut you antenna down to any length and place a small 1/8" black vinyl cap on the end. Be advised that the optimum length for an antenna is somewhere in the range of 32-36" of vertical mast, so your reception will probably suffer in rural areas.
I did use the search tool and most of the posts refer to power antennas or completely replacing the antenna and filliing in the body area. I'm searching through the archives now. I looked around on the web, but all I see is the short-stubby-fat types. I'll look at those vendor sites you suggested. Thanks.
I think they call them "shorty antennas". They cost less than $20 and just screw on to replace the long one. I put one on as soon as I got my C5 in 2004 and they work fine.
I replaced my stock fixed antenna with a universal shorty I got in Wal Mart. It's black with a small base and is wire wound. I think I paid $12.00 or so a couple years ago. Looks great and has super reception. I live in a rural area and my FRC gets better reception with the shorty than my other cars with their stock antennas. Check out Wal Mart, K Mart, auto parts stores. Don't get stuck with the 'Corvette Tax' on buying an antenna.
