Because the one on my 2000 as with many others here had a problem leaking acid and causing damage to the car. The battery post on mine came off with a side of the battery.

Using a deep cycle battery as a starting battery

There is generally no problem with this, providing that allowance is made for the lower cranking amps compared to a similar size starting battery. As a general rule, if you are going to use a true deep cycle battery (such as the Concorde) also as a starting battery, it should be oversized about 20% compared to the existing or recommended starting battery group size to get the same cranking amps. That is about the same as replacing a group 24 with a group 31. With modern engines with fuel injection and electronic ignition, it generally takes much less battery power to crank and start them, so raw cranking amps is less important than it used to be. On the other hand, many cars, boats, and RV's are more heavily loaded with power sucking "appliances", such as megawatt stereo systems etc. that are more suited for deep cycle batteries. We have been using the Concorde SunExtender AGM batteries in most of our vehicles for some time now with no problems.

I've mentioned this many times, but I'll say it again: The latest AC Delco batteries (since 2004) have significantly strengthened cases with emphasis placed on the ares around the terminals. What was a weakness is no longer an issue. As evidence, see their 50-month free replacement warranty - best in the business.

Just get an Optima Red Top.

Almost ANY AGM will die a quick death if not charged adequately (short trips or infrequent startups). Do a search on Optima Redtops and you will find many, many complaints of early deaths.

Keep an AGM charged and you will be rewarded. It seems that AC Delco assumed that owners would treat their batteries as I do - 10-15 mile trips and 3 times per week use. My AC Delco AGM has served me well for almost 6.5 years and is still going strong. Is that junk? Not by a long shot. In fact, it is the best battery I've ever had in the 33 years of driving I've accumulated.

Yes sir I understand, my reply was to someone with a stock 01 battery asking why he should not change something that was not broken.

If your car is not driven regularly, I strongly suggest a 'battery tender.' The OE Delco in my 1992 Vette lasted 10 YEARS with the help of a battery tender. Can't b*tch about that!

I have had great luck with Delco and Exide batteries.

My engineers took enough of them apart to confirm what I said. The Delphi AGM batteries were junk. You just got one of the few good ones.

Hi brzman -

If you even get this far in this thread....

Yes - you can get by with a Wal-Mart el-cheapo battery, or whatever you want.

One criterion that I have to put on my battery is that it has to at least look like it belongs in the engine compartment.

Now I don't have all chrome engine covers and painted stuff - but I do take some pride in the look of my engine and the associated components under the hood.

All of that said, I think the Optima Red Top is the best suited battery for my C5's.

I have one in my Z06, and coincidentally, I will be buying one for my wifes C5 as today her Sears Die-hard went completely dead all at once.

So - yes - Optima's are much more expensive than the CHEAPEST option, and somewhat more expensive than the "better quality" batteries offered at Autozone and OReilly's etc.

But on a car that I will spend $120 for floor mats, why is it such a big deal to spend $150 on a quality battery that also looks good under the hood?

Pay your money, take your choice.

best regards -

Some people have problems with AC Delco and some don't. Some people have problems with Optima RedTop and some don't. Some people have problems with Sears Die Hard and some don't....and on and on and on...Get my drift?
I have had no problems in 2+ decades in my Corvettes so far with

There are many 01-03 C5 owners who are still using their OEM AC Delco AGM. Not only are they NOT junk, but many have outlasted the best Optima. How many Optimas last 7+ years?

My original Delco lasted almost eight years with no leakage whatsoever.
