It's time for an oil change and the weather is getting colder up in the Ozarks. What weight should I go with in the winter? Also, what should I be running in warmer weather? I tried doing a search, but couldn't find anything except for a long, rambling post and was too lazy to ready the whole thing.
I use 10w40 Amsoil in my FRC and will most likely change my Z06 to 5w30 Amsoil next oil change, but it never gets super cold here, so I dont know if that helps.
Actually, Mobil 1 5W-30 is the preferred oil for year-round use, virtually anywhere in the US. 10W-30 is essentially, obsolete and offers no more protection during higher ambient temperatures than does 5W-30 Mobile 1.
5W-30 does circulate through your engine faster at startup than does 10W-30, even when the ambient temp is 70F.
0W-40 Mobil 1 is another good choice, but this may not be as widely available as good ol' 5W-30.
Pick an oil that is from a brand you trust, that meets the specs for your car (GM4718M) in the recommended grade 5W30.
Pennzoil Platinum
Quaker State Horsepower
Mobil 1
are 3 readily available at reasonable prices.
IF you are changing your oil like many of us in the 3-5K mile range, you don't need and won't benefit from anything more exotic.

Hey, I'd like a little feedback on the 0W-40. My neighbor is a sales manager for BG Automotive and he highly recommends it. He uses it in his Shelby. Anyone out there use this? Any issues that I should be concerned about?

and the data sheet link for more info. I'm fairly certain that Porsche uses it as factory fill for the Boxsters. The Mobile 1 tech help person to whom I spoke, uses this oil in his vehicle (in Texas), so I thnk you are fairly safe if using it in an LS1 or LS6.
