My friend has a 2002 automatic C5 with 45,000 miles. He complains about lifter noise on cold start-up. I told him that is the nature of this engine. Am I right? Please advise.
hmmmmmm... I don't think it's supposed to be that way - my '02 is at the stealership right now for the same problem, but on my car, the noise dosen't go away when it gets warmed up - the dealer told me there should be no lifter/valve train noise at all.... most of my friend's vettes are "noise free" in the engine.... I'm waiting to see if they fix it - still under warranty btw...
Piston slap. Mine does the same thing on cold starts but goes away after a couple of minutes. Just give the car time to warm up before mashing the pedal.
The report you will get is "Lifters Bleeding Down When Cold". I know, it happened to mine a couple of years ago. You'll need to replace the lifters.
Hasn't Chevy had lifter leakdown problems since the 50's? YEASH!!!!!!!
My Dad's 60's Chevies sounded like Diesels when they started. My Corvette just has the usual piston slap noise when cold.

Piston slap....very common, especially over 25,000 miles. When the pistons and the heads all reach operating temperature, all the dissimilar metals are expanded and "snug up". Should only take about one or two minutes to quiet. If it takes much longer, you may have some piston/ring issues to check out.
Piston Slap will come from the bottom end and more than a second or two means there are larger issues. Lifters tapping will come from the top end and a tap sound rather than a deep knock.
