I have a 98 stock Bose system i wanted to maybe get an amp and a sub or even just a hook up to hook my ipod into the radio i was told that they have to romove all speakers and all wiring to install this type of stuff is this true? thaks
You may get more help if you click on forum.. go down to general corvette and then post in the audio section.
You can do a variety of different setups. The real deal is how much do you want to spend. do you have a budget? This will shape the nature of the install and the type of components used.
You could stick with the stock head unit and simply upgrade the speakers.
its the FAQ and can pretty much answer any basic question. If you have any questions after reading it, let us know. oh and post in the audio forum. Some of the audio guys dont hang out here much
YES---i finally gave up on the Bose--I removed all 4 speakers--installed JL Audio amp in the rear compartment-- Sony Explod receiver--Sony Explod speakers in the rear and in the doors--bought a sub-enclosure that fits into the back storage area with a JL Audio 10" wofer---you can put a 12" back there too --according to your taste--12's have more of a bass low drone where 10's I prefer are more punchy and make the drums hit hard--
ALSO-- on the front speakers you will have to fabricate some sort of a fill panel to screw the speakers onto--Thw hole from the bose set-up is not round and no speaker will fit securely without a fill panel to screw to-- Cost of everything was as follows ( i bought all middle-of the-road stuff --not junk--but not high end)
Receiver--- $ 159.
Amp--- 325.
frt speaks (pr) 40.
rear skrs (pr) 60.
dash-kit-- 15.
wiring kit-- 39.
sub encl.---- 89.
10" sub --- 80.
tweeeters--- 30.
fill panels-- n/c (homemade from aluminum sheeting)
TOTAL $837.00
Installed it all myself in one day--sounds totally awesome and really pounds !!! No comparison to Bose at all---
PS I also sold all my old Bose stuff on E-Bay--I was surprised that people paid big $$ for that stuff--Sold the amp--CD Reciver--all 4 speakers for $350----so net cost of a killer system was only about $500
I used the big brown wire that runs off the keyswitch for the keyed source--ran all new wires to the speaker locations-ran 2 rca's to the back to where the amp goes-can't remember where i made the12v constant connection-but i think it was off the existing bose pigtail
I fitted an after market HU and I still have the stock Bose speakers. You need an interface unit because thay have amps in the speakers. Soundgate make the correct item and it plugs into the new HU and connects to the Bose. It has a potentiometer to set the levels appropriately.
All that said, if you're a real audio buff you may want to replace the Bose speakers if you want really good quality. Me? I flew jet fighters for years so my hearing is almost shot
The guys in audio section are really smart on these things so its worth dropping in there. May take longer to get a reply than C5 General so be patient.

no, you can keep your stock head unit and speakers if you want and just add a sub and amp for the sub by using the pac-oem adapter. if you want to add an ipod to your stock head unit, you can use the Ipod2car adapter. If you have the cable for a 12 disc changer the ipod2car just plugs right into that near the trunk, and then run your ipod cable up to the front.
now if you want to replace the amp for the other speakers, it's probably just as good to replace the speakers and run new wiring to them as well.
