Default OK_ I am in too! NOW Definitive Dimension of Coupler??

OK- you guys sold me on this KN filter DIY project. The filter is ordered and on the way to me.

Couple of things to confirm :

Measured a spare MAF and it's just slightly less than 4 inches. From what I have read- the KN Filter is oval shaped but a 4 inch silicone hose will pull over it. IS THIS CORRECT- Kindly Confirm ?? If this is the case- I just need a 4 inch length of coupling hose- Right?

Alternatively - perhaps I am better off ordering the KN coupler someone posted the link here on. Assuming it too connects onto the MAF??

Also- two normal large hose clamps of 4 inch size - Correct? One to the filter and one for the MAF. Anyone have a brand and part number for that little bugger?

Then I am good to go - other than a small filter for my air pump ( better solution than drilling)

BTW - note the Haltech Venom Filter comes with a small filter for the air pump too. I would suggest this route rather than drilling thru the KN filter.

I don't know what the dimensions are of the K&N coupler. I used a 4"x4" "Flexible PVC Coupler" found in the plumbing section at Lowes Hardware and it comes with 2 standard clamps that work perfectly. I've seen others here use a coupler that was shorter than 4", and I'm sure it worked fine for them. I agree with you that drilling a hole, although it provides a much cleaner look, is too much risk and that the small filter is fine.

The only other thing I did was seal off the hood opening at the front to prevent water from pouring onto the filter when I wash the car. I did a test and found that the area where the filter sits got soaked from either the hose spraying there or by water cascading off the hood there. I'm sure it's not a problem during normal driving.

If you haven't seen it yet, here is another thread on the same topic: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1913472

Have fun!!

[url]www.siliconeintakes.com. get the 4" to 3 1/2" one for $13.00. It fits perfect and looks like a factory piece. Comes in black, blue, or red.

I used a 4" coupler and it works fine... but a 4" - 3.5" would work better.

Why the 4" to 3.5" reducer coupling?? Seems a straight 4" sleeve would fit the MAF and the Filter best??

The MAF measures externa diameter just under 4" and the KN filter being discussed is 4" at widest ( but oval shaped).

I just want to understand so that I can purchase the correct fitting coupler.

^ I found my 4" one to bee a smidge loose, but the clamp took care of it... maybe I'm wrong and a 3.5 won't fit.

I have seen these silicone couplers at Autozone if you have one that is local near you.

Hmm...I see, it is lose around the MAF? Understandable since mine measures just under 4 inches external diameter.

I have worked with silicone hose on my turbo Volvo - it is pliable.

Believe I understand - stretch fit the coupling over the MAF at 3.5 ". The silicone should be flexible enough- and provide a very tight (good) fit.

So the 4" end of the coupling works well and snug of the KN filter? Clamps- U used a regular large diameter hose clamp around the KN Filter neck? Since the filter neck is oval as opposed to round- any issues with sealing?

Both clamps will need to obtain a tight grip on the filter and the MAF- otherwise the filter will fall lose.

Thanks for your patience- I am a hands on guy, and sometimes a little slow visualizing by typed words.

BTW- Do you /anyone know a filter brand/part number to for the small filter for the Air Pump??

I just checked siliconeintakes.com and they do carry a 4" to 3.75" silicone couple that is 3" in length for $12.99. This may be the perfect size to squeeze tight around the MAF and then around the KN Filter.

Will the 4" end fit the KN filter good? Or smaller bigger- because siliconeintakes.com carrys all sorts of sizes.

I got this from their site: Someone please do me a favor and perform the following measurement around the KN Filter neck- to determine the correct silicone coupling size: Wrap a string around the neck of the KN Air filter where the coupler would fit andthen measure the string, then divide by pi (3.14159) to get the size you need.. then kindly post the results back here

^ The 4" is the perfect size for the oval end of the filter. I used a standard hose clamp and tightened it enough to seal properly w/o hurting the carbon.

On the MAF end I used a t-bolt clamp and that took up the extra space of the 4" hose.

Same here, but I stayed with the standard hose clamp on both ends.

Same for me as well - 4" coupler with hose clapms on both ends.
K&N's website list the filter size as 4" (they just don't mention the odd oval shape.)

For the air hose filter, I just grabbed a clamp-on crank case breater filter from autozone, sort of like this - http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

I also bought a small plastic elbow (like from a hose adapter kit) to connect the breater to the air hose. Using a 90' elbow allowed me to angle the breater better as well.

Ah what passion- or a really slow day - anyhow I did some research and measured the air pump hose to filterbox hose inner diameter for my 2002 Z06:
The answer to my own question regarding a filter for the air pump:

K & N Crankcase Breather filter #62-1070 ( rubber top) or #61-1160 (chrome top) filter are 3 " diameter/ 2" long with a vent tube of .75 inch which will fit the air pump hose ( just secure with a hose clamp).

Are you sure about the size? The air pump hose is a thick wall rubber hose. On my '03, it measured as so:

ID: .600
OD: .915

With these measurements, the 5/8" OD vent diameter would be the best fit.

I am sure of the air pump hose - having worked with it on another intake before.

I measured the inside diameter several times- and on my 2002 Z06 it is .75 inches. Now - this is the streched size to accommodate the fitting on the oem air box. If I were to cut the hose a few inched down past where it goes onto the fitting it may well reduce to 5/8 inch.

At any rate - the hose clamp will take up any slack.

Thanks - I will double check in the morning prior to ordering
