Just ordered the K&N filter 2 mins ago. I get stuff from Amazon in 1-2 days no matter what I pay for shipping, maybe a close warehouse. Oh, and they apparently aren't out of them yet. lol.
I agree this is going to look really clean. I have AIR still, in fact the hose was turned downward and near where it originates and the car still passed the visual part of the Calif Smog check. Probably becuase most smog check guys don't know to look for that hose... But I did notice the K&N FIPK at the link on page two says they are CARB exempt. Not sure how.
(btw have been keeping an eye on your project, very neat stuff!)
Thanks for starting this thread DERJ and for contributors like CCAJUN4REAL & SPERKINS. I love mods that involve a little ingenuity. Very cool... even if sperkins has sewer pipe couplers holding the filter in place.
I'm considering adding brackets to the bottom of the intake in order to keep the filter from flopping around when hitting bumps. Maybe that's not an issue, but it can't hurt. bob

Not really needed at all. Aftermarket intakes like the Halltech Stinger or the new Venom simply attach to your throttlebody and just "sit there". If you're using the oem air bridge then it has the grommets on either side to keep it in place.
I have an aftermarket air bridge and mine will just sit there. My father has a Halltech on his '04 Z06 and it doesn't creat any issues w/o having any auxullary attachments.
Sperkins what coupler is that and where'd you get it? It looks like it's stepped? I got the 4" one on the way.
It is a straight coupler. I got the coupler at Ace Hardware. It's called a 4 inch "No Hub Coupling". It's Ace part# 45394 and it's in the plumbing section. It cost me just over 7 bucks. The hose clamps are attached to an aluminum sleeve with very tiny rivets that took me all of about 3 seconds to drill out (to remove the clamps). You'll notice when your filter arrives that the opening is not exactly round, but the Ace coupling fits this side pretty good. It tightens down good on both sides.
The rubber coupling is inside this sleeve, but it's not pictured here. You can see the tiny rivets I knocked out to free up the clamps:

I have aftermarket carbonfiber bridge with sillycone adapter. Will need to figure out the MAF to filter connector. Likely a visit to the plumbing supply or Lowes or homecheapo. bob

I used a 4"x4" flexible PVC coupler from Lowe's. It's in the plumbing section.
just installed mine today i used a 3" ace adapter $6.99 with 2 clamps and it fit perfect to my mas from my carbon air bridge. but its a little long but it will do for now till i get a real silicone. thanks mike
So you think that Vararam or this setup does nothing at all for you in a stock Z06? If you do think it helps at all, I was wondering if this setup is as good as an aftermarket setup such as Vararam.
I think you would be close in the additional HP gain. The true benefits of going with the Vararam is the fact that it pulls ambient air at all times, which will be much cooler than under hood temps. Cold air equals HP, but unless going to the NHRA the couple/few HP difference will really be null. Nice set up, and the price is right, no Corvette tax (I run the Vararam).

this is the path i took on a cai set-up.ebay, $40.00 shipped. replacing the china made filters with k&n for about 45.00 each and will look and work great......
You guys fricking ROCK. I just sold my intake and was considering this VERY mod. I was in constant communication with the K&N techs and was going to use the C5 filter which is smaller. I just went to Amazon and picked my filter up for $96 shipped.
