My filter is waiting for me on my doorstep at home.
I'm going to try to drill the hole for the PCV. I'll give an update asap.

One quick update. I drilled the hole for the PVC hose though the carbon fiber without any problem using a series of new drill bits starting very small and stepping up to a unibit.

BUT!!!!....I would highly recommend stuffing some rags or something similar inside the filter before drilling. I failed to do that and now I will be cleaning out carbon fiber dust from inside the filter for who nows how many hours before I can complete the install.

Another thing to note - On the bottom of the filter, there is an open hole that is tapped for a 1/4-20 bolt. Be sure to screw a bolt in there to avoid having an unfiltered hole.

Last thing is to be sure to wear a good mask or respirator if you drill this thing. This stuff can seriously F up your lungs.

Is photobucket down or something? I can't see the pics so I posted the links also.

I can't wait to see if I can actaully feel a difference in throttle response with everything else being stock.

^ You should... I noticed a difference when I put my BPP Vortex Rammer on almost 5 years ago

I'm doing this purely for the cleaner looks and easier service. I ordered a new shroud to... should be very clean once all installed.

I got the coupler at Ace Hardware. It's called a 4 inch "No Hub Coupling". It's Ace part# 45394 and it's in the plumbing section. It cost me just over 7 bucks. The hose clamps are attached to an aluminum sleeve with very tiny rivets that took me all of about 3 seconds to drill out (to remove the clamps). You'll notice when your filter arrives that the opening is not exactly round, but the Ace coupling fits this side pretty good. It is a little loose on the MAF side though. I'm sure the hose clamp will take up the slack though.

The rubber coupling is inside this sleeve, but it's not pictured here. You can see the tiny rivets I knocked out to free up the clamps:

I bought a 4"x4" flexible PCV coupler from Lowe's for about $7. No modding required - just slip on and tighten. It came with the clamps and everything...

What size hole did you end up drilling?

I was afraid of the same problem - that and scratching / cracking the CF. I even thought about disassembly, but it seems to be glued to the filter. Let us know how it goes with cleaning it out.

You might want to consider using Locktite or something. You'd NEVER know it if that screw came out.

Nice job!!!

Do you think this is a large improvement over the Zip Tie mod, performance wise? Thanks.

I'm not sure the exact size of the hole. I made it the exact same size as the OE hole by marking the ring on the step drill bit.

I was worried about the carbon fiber cracking or shredding/tearing the fibers as well, but I went slow usinf my drill press and it never gave me a problem and the factory grommet fits perfectly.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just slide a shop vac hose into the large orifice prior to drilling (versus the stuffing rags option)? That's what I would recommend.

-Deano (still 100% stock... )

Yep. But I didn't think of that either.

I really like these Blackwing/K&N FIPK set ups. In fact I'm looking to move away from the Rammer that was on the car when I bought it a couple months ago. Man does that filter get dirty as an SOB.

Need to pick up a replacement shroud too, another less desireable aspect of the Rammer. bob

^ Ruffian this is exactly what I'm doing... the new shround was like $50 from www.gmpartshouse.com.

Selling my BPP Vortex Rammer after 4 years. Theis K&N setup looks so much cleaner and will get just as much air w/ my TS facia (it'd get more than enough with the oem Z06 cold air screens) and being that I have no AIR it'll be simple and clean.

I ordered the 4" black coupler and some t-bolt clamps to make for a super clean install.

First of all thanks to DERJ for the great idea. I finished my install this afternoon after work and took a quick test drive afterward. Installation from start to finish I would say was only about 30-40 minutes. Here's what I can tell you so far on a bone stock '03 Z (including the tires).

**There are a few factors to consider that really affect my ability to know what (if anything) I've gained by this install.**

Results: (on deserted rural backroad. )

      ** NO CODES **

Throttle response seemed a little "quicker" and the car really seemed to have more mid-range torque (especially in 3rd gear). Not sure if that was related to the filter install or the fact that it was 30 something degrees outside, but either way it was definately noticeable.

At any RPM, I could literally shred the tires off in second gear, even when squeazing into the throttle. Before I could only do that when jumping in it above 3500rpm. Once again, I'm sure air and tire temps had a lot to do with that too.

For less than a 100 bucks, I would definately recommend it. It is by far the best mod I've done to date (since it was my first ). Now I'm just waiting on a little warmer weather and better tires so I can get a better before and after comparison.
