Just did this w/ C6 Z06 shifter - plus I was having a problem popping out of 1st
Hey guys,
Just did this mod and I'd say it's worth doing. I had to go to ACE hardware to find the washers, they were 20mm fiber washers in the oil pan washer section/bin. I tried the shifter with the bolt out as someone suggested and it's way too sloppy with the c6 z06 shifter. Using 2 fiber washers seemed to do little to stiffen it up. I went down to 1 washer and it felt pretty good. The fiber washers crunch down well so you can dial in the right feel. Plan on going under a few times, I used ramps as well.
By the way, this all started because I was coming out of first more and more often. It makes a horrible sound and you can really feel it if your hand is on the shifter. When I pulled up the center console and looked at the shifter assembly, it was all the way forward on the torque tube, with the connection bolts not very tight. I followed someone else's suggestion on here to pull the shift rod connection bolt and re-secured it right in the middle of the connection rod where the indention is machined out. I also used thread locker because I think the shifter/connection rod connection was slightly moving from not being torqued down enough. Once I did this and re-engaged the alignment pin on the shifter, the shifter assembly wanted to be perfectly centered when in neutral and with the torque tube bolts loose. I cranked those down to spec with thread locker, pulled back the alignment pin, and put everything back. Shifting is really nice now and it hasn't jumped out of 1st at all in 200 miles or so. Now I love shifting again, this is how the c6 z06 shifter is suppose to feel like.

Yep, Very rewarding mod for a few bucks and 10 minutes. I used 3 copper drain plug gaskets from NAPA for a total thickness of .151 That was over 2 years ago and all is good.

Sure! Make an appointment with your area tuner (I'm grateful for being 60 miles from East Coast Supercharging) and get the line pressure raised and shift points moved. I'm sure tuners do more than that to the A4 program, but you get the idea.
Guys. I just did this mod and used 1 washer and it has made no difference at all, has anyone else had to use more that 1 to get better shifting ? The biggest problem for me is getting into first and reverse, all the other gears go in ok but the shift is very notchy

Ya, I did one washer also about a month ago. Didn't notice much difference. Same issues as you, 1st gear and reverse can sometimes be pretty stiff. Mine has a Hurst shifter that was in the car when I got it. The guy I bought it from wasn't all that happy with the Hurst, I thought this Mod might help. I'm gonna add 1 more washer when I get back under there to change O2 sensors. If that doesnt help I'll look at re-alligning the shifter.
I didnt know the shifter needed aligning ? Pretty sure mine is a Hurst too.
I'm not sure of the Procedures to align shifter, but have read other threads that made referance to doing this. I'm gonna research that if adding a washer doesn't help any.

I recently purchased the Hardbar delrin 4" shift **** and the additional leverage it provides has made shifting much easier. I bought some washers for the A-V mod, but I don't think I'm going to use them now.
