Since it is somewhat apart already I would try to negotiate with the service manager. Depending on how busy the shop is he may be motivated to match his competitors pricing.

Just for fun, have them show you the labor book for a water pump change, then ask them why they charge $200 an hour for labor and $400 for $100 part.

God, the worst part is people get suckered all the time.
this is what I would do... ask thier rate per hr first. Have the price of the part on hand(someone in this post gave the price), then ask why it's three to four times more when calculated out

Yep I got the same treatment to the tune of $1350. water pump and opti, and still had all kinds of problems until I resolved them myself. After that I purchased the factory service manuals ($135. worth their weight in gold) and updated a few tools (and new tool chest )

From that point on, it was buy the part near wholesale and install them myself. I know the quality of work and carefulness of my work, the dealers don't treat your stuff the same.

You know it is very sad this is the way a dealership treats a brand loyal customer and who also would be a future customer too. This just is something I never could understand and never understood why GM would not reel in their dealers and their service centers.

I've seen cases where the service center doubles the price of a part, and where the customer could walk two doors over to the dealer parts department pay half that for the part walk back over and hand it to the service guy and pay the labor and fees to install it and SAVE money! That is unbelievable.

Instead they are focused simply on processing as many service orders as possible in a given time, maximizing every ounce of profit, and providing less that reasonable service. Too bad, unhappy customers will not go back there to buy another vehicle, if they are given choices.

Well maybe you can find a good smaller shop that will do good work for a fair price. Be nice if you had a local mom-pop corvette shop nearby.

Yeah on the part, not the labor. The part is chump changed compared to the labor. Just like the midas lifetime brakes. The 5 dollar pads are covered forever, the labor which is two hundred is not.

Just another sales gimmick. Remember when GM Good wrench had the "lifetime" going.

And you have to be careful with this, ask is the part they are replace covered under the lifetime warranty, because there are a lot of items that are not covered. Plus it has to be installed by them to qualify. Same part you buy at the parts counter carries a 12 month usually, same part different warranty if the dealer installs it.

And your right, if its going to fail again, it will probably happen soon after installation.

$110 to take it apart, double that to put it back together and ~$250 for the part...but $1080 to replace it. That's some very interresting math.

I love my vette but the stealership is so far below par on service its sad. I pull into the chevy dealer service dept, and stand there for half an hour, finally get helped to be handed a quote that would feed the third world for a month, no effort from them at all. Hell I bought the vette and tahoe from them, nada! and my car is under extended factory warranty, I tell them warranty boys and I get an ohhhh. - Rydel Chevorlet

My wife takes her BMW to the dealer, 10 minutes she is on the way home in a loner, they call 15 minutes later say the part for the convertable top motor is about 1500 installed, but since you bought the car and your husband bought his, consider this a good faith repair on us, your car will be ready at 5PM, no cost. - Bob Smith Imports

He could also go buy an aftermarket pump with a lifetime warranty. Hell, most of the parts shops will sell GM parts and honor the lifetime warranty. Then he can have whoever he wants do the labor.

For instnace, PepBoys will give sell the lifetime warranty part and give a guarantee on the labor. If the part goes bad, they will replace it at no charge to the customer. IMHO, I break like the wind when I have the option of going to a stealership for parts/labor for stuff not covered under the vehicle's warranty.

Hmmmm? I would be tempted to print out this string of emails, show it to your Dealer and ask him if he is sure he didn't make a mistake on his calculator somewhere. Tell him that the forum wants to know what dealership this is and anxious to see his answer, cause if he stays at that price, people in his area should be warned that he's a little on the high side. If he stands firm on the price, don't forget to let us know what Dealership it is.
Also, rather than pay them a $100bucks for a mech to crawl underneath with a light and say "yep, boss, its a leaker", I'd obtain 3 estimates from other shops and try and negotiate with the service manager. NOt sure if I'd trust the job of whatever they put back together. During negotiations, just say you don't feel that is a fair price since you now know the going rate and you'll gladly pay a fair price.
Good luck ....Rocket

Pays to shop around. The dealer was ridiculous on their price. Good luck with the repair.

Default the name....

There are 2 Chevrolet dealerships in/near my town of Lafayette LA. The most recent one I brought it to for this raping is called MARTIN CHEVROLET.

I didn't bring it to SERVICE CHEVROLET (the other one in town) because the last time I went there I asked them to look at the fog light that was out to see if it was just a bulb or what. They said 'NOPE, NOT JUST THE BULB. GOTTA REPLACE THE WHOLE THING ...THAT WILL BE A COUPLE HUNDRED BUCKS'
I bring the car to another auto place for some other reason couple months later and ask the guy to take a look at the fog light and guess what!? JUST A BURNT BULB.

Stealerships suck. I will do my best to never buy from them nor have my vehicle serviced by them going forward.

Buy from a forum member.
Fix it yourself or at a local shop.

Avoid Martin Chevrolet and Service Chevrolet in the Lafayette, Breaux Bridge Louisiana area.
