He could also go buy an aftermarket pump with a lifetime warranty. Hell, most of the parts shops will sell GM parts and honor the lifetime warranty. Then he can have whoever he wants do the labor.
For instnace, PepBoys will give sell the lifetime warranty part and give a guarantee on the labor. If the part goes bad, they will replace it at no charge to the customer. IMHO, I break like the wind when I have the option of going to a stealership for parts/labor for stuff not covered under the vehicle's warranty.
Yeah I think NAPA sells AC-Delco parts. Even still, there are a few dealers around the country that do support Corvette owners & this forum in some cases, and those are the one's you want to do business with. If you can repair it yourself, there are really good operations that offer just over wholesale pricing on parts for your baby.
I have one in particular that I use exclusively for over the last 6 years. In my opinion they are the best. As far as buying a Vette plenty of good mom-pop Corvette only dealers to take special care of you. I have my choice as to whom I always recommend.
Dealers are not in business to give fair and reasonable quality service no matter if its a repair or a sale. That's too bad and what makes it worst with GM slumping they don't address the issues. But more so they condone the issues. Sad very sad.
clearly a reason why they call them the "Stealership"
So, so true. A lady in my office just paid the Nissan stealership $2100 for practically nothing. I was stunned. Boy, was she pizzed when we convinced her she'd been used and tossed away dirty.

yea the girl i sold my 03' altima too had a similar thing at nissan stealership, $2,000 for an alternator and catalytic converter. luckily she got the car for $2k under blue book, so it evens out...
My friend and neighbor with his 02 also had the water pump go bad and the dealership charged him $1000+ also. I have the GMPP on my 04 and on my previous 00 and found it well worth the cost.
Yes, that is a raping. Here is another one for you. I ordered a part from a well known vendor here for $69.95. It weights one pound and I needed it the next day. I was charged $60 for overnight shipping. I never understood why some vendors have to make money on shipping. I know I never do that.
I get $75 a minute for replying to threads on the Corvette Forum.
Buy $1,000 worth of tools and manuals, and seriously start learning to fix these things as they come at you. Most of these 'everyday type', maintanence related, typical mechanically involved repairs are not that difficult. If you can navigate your computer on this forum, you can change your own waterpump, spark plugs, oil, ABS module, brakes, oxygen sensors, etc..
That'll be $167.50, thank you... (I'm a slow typer, but I WARRANTY my words)
You can send me a check, I trust you.
I don't believe the water pump is covered under GMPP. I have one, and reading the contract it doesn't cover much at all. I believe it falls under the wear and tear clauses and they code it as an unpaid claim. If you have/had a GMPP and they did cover it, then more than likely it was the dealer pushing it through. In that case you must have polaroids of family members or the service manager is your cousin.
STEALERSHIPS usually charge 3 times the part cost on average towards the repair cost. Some higher some lower. They utilize a mechanics labor hour guide to quote the labor rate.
It is realtively easy to find someone to do the wrech work for less becuase the don't have to buy the diagnostic equipment required for the other stuff automobile manufacturers add on to the cars today.
Most of the time if you need the diagnostics done it's off to the Stelership you go and the have you until the job is done. Kinda like a bodyshop that only does insurance repair work.
Glad to hear you found someone to do the job at a fair price to fit your wallet.
Everytime I read one of these posts I'm thankful that I have a great dealer service dept. The guys go above and beyond for me......GMPP has a lot to do with your dealer going to bat for you.
You might not be saying that if you lived here in the Orlando area and had Bill Heard as your dealer. They are the nastiest people on the face of this planet. I thoroughly believe when hired they put them through special training on how to screw the customer and how to treat them like yesterday's garbage. If you mention GMPP, you just went further down on the list. And the quality of service from many dealers is so subpar your better off taking the vehicle to Bubba's garage who would make a statement like gee never seen one these fancy cars before! We have three other major Chevy dealers in the area and it's a toss up as to who is worst.
You sir are extremely lucky to have a dealer like you indicated.
If I were you, I contact the BBB for them trying to rip you off.
I'd also call your local investigation News team and suggest they run a piece on why local dealership service departments would rip off customers when another mechanic did the job for more than 1/4 less!
Wouldn't have any affect, I say this because Florida's State Attorney General just wrapped up a case against Bill Heard for business practices. The fine, a whole whopping $200,000., they make more than that in one day ripping people off. And I have been there since that case was finished and they are no different then before, actually I think they have become worst and even more nasty towards customers. They'll just keep doing it until they get caught again pay another small fine and continue as normal.
These mega dealers are way more powerful then the laws of the states in which they operate because of the huge tax roll they pay to the states, counties and cities. They buy their immunity to operate as they see fit.
If you own a Vette out of warranty, it's a good idea to find a repair shop that specializes in Vettes. We have one here in Lancaster and repairs are always fair and reasonable. Best thing is this guy doesn't try to make a big repair out of a small one. Very honest and knows his Vettes. I often go in just to take him coffee and donuts even if nothing is needed on the car, just staying acquainted and showing my appreciation for his honesty.
