I hear the drone but its not at all what you describe...at least not for me! I have a 6 speed, I hear the drone between about 1500-2000 rpm only. in 6th gear at 55 or 60 mph in the 1200-1400rpm range the car is virtually silent. 70-75mph puts me in the bad range. again its nothing I can't live with, its not bad at all...until you hit a hill, then I try to shift to 5th, in 6th going up hill at 70 is the only situation where the drone is really bad. other than that it isn't much at all. I have stock exhaust manifolds and H pipe. I don't think I want to go with an X pipe on my C5 because I'm afraid it will make it too quiet and more exotic sounding, I like the sound of the stingers.
Although much of the "drone" can be muffled by doing the Frost King mod. Do a search to find the procedure. I believe Evil Twin started it, quite a while back.
That being said, I don't have the Frost King mod and the slight drone doesn't bother me. I've had my Borlas for many years, now and wouldn't trade that sound for anything else. And yes, I've heard almost all at various dyno day events.
I have a B&B PRT system and I get the dreaded drone, I made a partition and it did cut down some of the drone maybe 30%. I put a blanket in the rear well and it cut down even more. This winter I'm going to try the frost king mod and see if that helps. If not I'll just turn up the radio and smile.
good luck man. i went thru the same thing and the only thing that got rid of my drone was a different set of mufflers.
What worked for me was a previously cared for set of Ti's. You still get some sound, but "0" drone! The Borla's were nice around town, but a 6 hour drive on the interstate and a terrible headache (drone-induced) convinced me that the Stingers were not for me.
I noticed you have a vert. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have the quad Stingers on a coupe. Ran them with a Magnaflow X-Pipe with stock mandifolds and cats for almost 2 years and no drone at all. Loved them. Once I went to AR headers and hi-flow cats, that is when the drone started for me. I ended up installing some Car Chemistry inserts and that took care of the drone. The Frost King mod also sounds like a good fix. Good Luck with it.

Yes I have a vert. But when the top is down I get drone but it doesn't bother me. I actually like it. But when the top comes up it vibrates or echos and makes the drone unbearable.

Car Chemistry inserts???
Yes, here is a link to a post I put up a few months back regarding my purchase and installation of the Car Chemistry inserts to elimiate the drone I was getting after my AR header install.
