Hey guys im looking at an '01 z06, and i am familiar with the oil consumption problems that many of the 01 z06's had. The vehicle was built in october of 2000. I know that they corrected the problem in the later 2001's, but i was wondering if anyone has an early built 01 z06 and was curious to hear about this problem.
Most don't know what they're talking about... if you get an '01 and drive it hard it will burn more oil.
Many people hardly drive their cars and if they do they change the oil every 3000 miles and don't see much if any oil consumption.
If you follow the oil life monitor on the DIC and drive the car hard you will see a good bit of oil consumption. If you follow the DIC you will be changing the oil 6000-9000 miles depending on conditions.
The ring package wasn't changed until '02. My car burnt 1 quart every 1000 miles until the re-ring in early '04 now it doesn't burn any between 6000-7000 mile oil changes.
There are two sources of oil consumption:
1. The actual rigngs from the oil control ring
2. The valley cover under the intake manifold where the PVC system vents pressure. The oil/air seperator seal can go bad.
When my car was fixed under warranty they replaced the valley cover and the ring package.
Get the car and enjoy it... if it burns a few quars it's not that big of a deal.
has anyone seen the amount of oil being consumed decrease, by changing to a different brand of oil? ive heard that if you use castrol syntec it helps with the problem, anyone ever see any results?

Owning my car through that "era" everyone tried everything. Some swore thicker oil worked, some swore that the rings just to 30,000 miles to break in because the motor was broken in on synthetic oil.
In the end it's all BS... '02+ cars have no issues on 5w30 and being run from birth on syn oil.

You had to drive like a complete idiot to have oil problems in a 2001 Z06.
EVERY C5 will lose some oil. Ask anyone who has a catch can! Some of the oil that is lost will be replaced by moisture, so even though the dipstick looks good, oil has been lost, plain and simple.
That being said, I must also mention that some 01s used more oil than did other year C5s, but this was NOT the norm. And despite tighter tolerances related to engine builds, oil use still varies from car to car, regardless of year. The quandry is: How do you know before you buy? Perhaps a statement of oil usage as measured by dipstick readings (no perfect, but better than nothing) that is signed by the seller would be beneficial if a buyback was included in the "guarantee"?
01s use more oil because they were built looser--more H/P--get what you want just make sure its a LOW mile jewel--lots of beat op junky Z06s out there--I rather have a nice queen than a 20 footer regardless of the year--
I own a 2001 Z06 and do not have the oil burning issue. No ring work or engine work at all has been done. All I do is take names at night and kick asses in the morning with it! Oh, I have 35K on the ticker too.
