Sorry to put a crimp in the thought of short trips...my '99 at its now 302K miles, starts, runs and drive 61 miles one way to work then 8 hours later, the same. It simply never gets short trips.
This scum like stuff that I found inside the engine, will wipe or scrub off but its almost like its glued there. My first thought that someone put in an additive without my knowledge. I remember something about Slick50 coating parts to make them last longer and so on, but I've NEVER added anything to the Mobil1. I love Mobil1 and have been using since my very first car, 1969 Olds Cutlass. I don't remember the number of miles I put on it. The other high mileage car that I used it in was my '82 VW Scirocco that I ended up giving away after 351,000 miles on it back in '98. It too only had Mobil1 in it and I drove it here, over in England for two years, then back here again.
No white smoke i checked that right away and the coolant is exactly where it should be theres been no loss at all. I did get a head/cam swap at 40,000 miles went to patriot performance and a nasty cam could that have anything to do with it?

Could be good news. Wipe it away and do an oil change and you may be good to go
