Default Glove box problems

Sounds like a dumb question, but how do you repair the latch handle to the glove box that just hangs there and won't open the door?

Are there any screws visible from under the latch handle, outside the glove box? Otherwise... time to dig out your Vette manual... or wait for Patches to chime in... Good luck!

Yesterday, I unlocked my glove box to open it. When I pulled the lever, I felt something break, and the lever pulls out, but the latch doesn't unlock. Now the lever swings free, but the glove box won't open. Any suggestions?

I finally got around to checking my "other" email address and had a ton of messages telling me my inbox was full. I can only assume people were trying to help since I haven't posted that much lately. I've deleted a lot of messages if anyone can help me out.

By now I assume you got it open... How did you do it? Mine just broke in the same manner.

Heres the Techprocedure. It looks like a simple unscrew to get the handle out. I guess you'll need a new part as it doesn't look like thats easily serviced if something broke.

Undo the lock cylinder and put it back into the new handle.

Lock Cylinder Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Compartment Door
Removal Procedure

1. Open the I/P passenger compartment door.
2. Remove the screws retaining the passenger compartment door handle.
3. Remove the door handle.

4. Insert the key into the door handle lock cylinder.
5. Turn the key 1/4 turn clockwise (LOCK position).
6. Release the lock cylinder retainer.
Insert a small diameter tool into the slot on the RH side of the door handle and depress and hold the lock cylinder retainer.

7. Turn the key an additional 1/4 turn clockwise.
8. Pull to remove the lock cylinder.
Installation Procedure
1. Insert the key into the lock cylinder.
2. Insert the lock cylinder into the passenger compartment door handle.
Align the lock cylinder in the same position used for removal, then push to seat fully.
3. Turn the key 1/4 turn counterclockwise to secure the lock cylinder retainer.
4. Turn the key an additional 1/4 turn counterclockwise and remove.
5. Inspect the operation of the lock cylinder.
The lock cylinder should only allow a 1/4 turn and should be securely retained in the door handle.
6. Install the door handle to the passenger compartment.
7. Install the passenger compartment door handle retaining screws.
8. Close the passenger compartment door.

Thanks DeeGee, right now my problem is that the handle has broken off yet the latch won't release so I can't get to the screws to replace the mechanism.

Anybody know how to get this thing loose/open?

At this point I would break off the outside latch and then use a screw driver to try and pop the release mechanism.

Thanks, I've been trying that. At this point the glove box should just fall open, but it won't it's jammed.

You need to break out the latch and you'll be able to get it open. I had the same problem on my bro's 2001 Z06.
