Installed a pulsing 3rd brake light this weekend. Seems to work great and was a snap to install.
Here's my question and I don't know if it's coincidence or has to do with the pulsing 3rd brake light.
As I shift from 1st to 2nd the brake light lights up on the dash for a second or 2 and goes off, like the 1st-4th light (which operates as usual) Emerg, brake is definately off and only started today.
I'm thinking of unplugging the pulsing 3rd brake wiring to see if it still happens or not.
Anyone have this problem and any ideas appreciated
Sounds like a grounding issue but I'm not sure where the link is between the shifter and the brake light circuit. The wiring diagram shows a link to the EBCM but no mention of the shifter
I think your idea would be agood start. if it stops (forgive the pun) when you unplug the new unit at least you've narrowed down where the problem lies.
Yeah, I thought it would be a good start, I'll unplug at lunchtime and give an update later.
I really wanted this pulsing brake thing to work, oh, well
When you fitted it, did you need to ground it Bruce? If so, a quick check to make sure its tight and clean would be worth a try.
If I recall correctly, the brake warning light is triggered by a switch on the E Brake handle. Pull it on a notch and it sets a voltage on the circuit bringing the light on.
I think it also tells you when the brake fluid is getting low. Did you check that? It could be just a coincidence that you het the warning level at the same time?
ok, checked the pulsing unit connections, that's not it.
As suggested, I checked the brake fluid during lunch, could it be as crazy as the brake fluid being slightly low that when I accelerate it sets the sensor off and the light on?
I'll add some brake fluid when I get home and see what happens.
Man, I'm learning alot from you guys, thanks and I'll leave an update tonight.

STAY TUNED!! Theres a WHOLE LOT MORE TO LEARN! Just wait till the MOD bug bites you!
Yeah, I hear you BC
Haven't had the mod bug hit yet but the chrome bug is starting to get into my head. Only thing holding me back is the $$$$$
Anyway, on the way home from work the check engine light pops on. God what a chill that sent down my spine. Will be checking the codes after dinner.
As for the brake light, you guys hit it on the head, low brake fluid. When I accelerated from a stop, light kicked on. I even tried to hit it in 5th on the highway and light pops on. Got home, added brake fluid and wammo, no more light (at least for now)
It seems it never ends, I'm learning alot about my C5 but when can I just enjoy the car without getting home and having to fix another problem?
Thanks again, I'll call on you guys after I get the engine code
I couldnt wait till after dinner and had to check the codes
Went through the process I found on this board to check the DIC and this is what I found;
10-PCM - Powertrain Control Module
P1416 AIR System Bank 2
I reset the code so the check engine light is now off but what do I do to keep it off? Is this a fix I can do myself and if yes can you help get me through this?

That indicates that you A.I.R system is NOT functioning correctly. Most likely due to the check valves being stuck shut shut or the pump not flowing pressureized air for any number of reasons. I have a detailed post that explains eveything and how to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.
Thanks Bill, you da man!
What's the chance that I can drive the car till the weekend and try cleaning the valve on Saturday? Won't damage anything driving a few days will I?
Just being a shadetree mechanic, I'll definately print your instructions and have them by my side when looking for that hose.
Thanks again Bill
