Default Discolored side mirror

I have the convenience package and my side mirror has become very discolored, probably from the auto dimming tint. Can this be fixed by anything other than ordering a new side mirror? I know several C5 owners and nobody has experienced this problem. I guess you can't just replace the mirror and connection, rather than the entire body. Mine is an '04 and it just happened over the last few months, probably from having to park outside at my new office building that doesn't have covered parking.

I just got my C5 in Oct. and the driver's side mirror is discolored also and I get double images from it. Hope someone know how to fix it.

Someone recently ripped the entire driver side mirror off my wife's car. The mirror broke, and the motor inside no longer works (after re-connecting). I talked with an experienced GM mechanic last week about it. He told me that you typically replace the entire mirror. If you try to replace the small motor inside it, the plastic clips (holding motor) will break. I also think he felt that the mirror itself would break when trying to remove it.

You can buy a sheet of stick on replacement mirror-like material from Walmart for about $5. Its in the Auto section. You just trim it to shape with a pair of strong scissors.

It's maybe not as pretty as a replacement glass but its cheaper than $400+ for a replacement mirror. If you have the electro-chromatic glass, you'd lose that function.

Worth a try for $5 before you spend the big $$

That might be fine for a daily driver (barely) but that is a bit rough on a Corvette man....

Very true. Even at discounted prices replacements dont come cheap

Mirror glass Right 97-04 $69.33 $52.77
Mirror W/memory Right 97-02 $263.35 $200.44

The right and left mirrors are different part numbers.

There’s a procedure in the Shop manual to replace just the mirror glass. It looks reasonably straight forward:

Removal:

Push in on one edge of the mirror glass lifting the mirror case to allow finger access
Grasp the glass case firmly and pull the case from the mirror body
Disconnect the wire connectors from the case (heated mirror)
Remove the two jackscrews from the mirror glass case
- Bend the jackscrew over
- Press down on the side of the jackscrew popping the jackscrew from the mirror glass case
- Save the jackscrews for reinstallation to the mirror motor

Reinstallation:

The jackscrew springs must be positioned down compressing the fingers at the bottom of the jackscrews
Push to install the jackscrews in the mirror motor.
Rotate both jackscrews to position the ball flanges to be inline with the attaching hub. they will then be correctly positioned to the mirror glass case.
Connect the electrical connections to the mirror glass case (heated mirror)
Align the case to the mirror motor
With the palm of your gloved hand press firmly on the center of the mirror glass case until the case engages onto the motor
push the mirror glass to the jackscrews
- Right mirror. Rotate the mirror glass down and press firmly on the lower side engaging the mirror glass case to the lower jackscrew
- Left Mirror. Rotate the mirror glass up and press firmly on the upper side engaging the mirror glass case to the upper jackscrew
- Rotate the mirror glass case and press firmly on the outer side engaging the mirror glass case to the outer jackscrew. The jackscrews will give a clicking noise when properly seated.

Its easier with the diagrams but hope that helps

mine is discoloured because there is water behind the film on the mirror. Somehow my mirror cracked. You can replace just the mirror itself for about $60.

Painfully so I'm afraid. The people who bought my last car were very thanful for it, but I'm worse with this car because I don't plan on every selling it.

HELP PLEASE!!! I have lost my tow jackscrews for the DS mirror!!! Does anyone know if you can buy them separately??? Do I have to buy a mirror?

Does anyone in this thread have two extra jackscrews from a broken / replaced mirror?

Thanks!!!

Try one of the Forum Vendors, Gene Culley would be agood start, although I'm not sure if they are sold individually. If not you could try one of the used parts guys like Genes Karshop
