Look behind the drivers seat you should have two pull wires, one for the rear hatch and one for the gas flap. They will be somewhat covered by the carpet. At least for my Vert. Also check the fuses.
ok... and how can i find out if the problem is the button or the harness or something else...
1. Pull off the center console.
2. Check to make sure the electric connector/plug is still connected the the fuel release switch. If it's not, connect it and try the switch. If it is still connected, ...
3. Disconnect the plug and get a paperclip or stiff wire and stick one end into the hot connector and the other end into the ground connector of the plug. This will short the connection.
If the door releases, you have a bad switch. If it doesn't release, then you have a bad release mechanism or an electrical issue. Also, check the fuse. If you have an OHM meter you can check to see if you have power to the switch.
If it's not the switch, check the fuses under the passenger side kick panel. Check the diagram for the fuel door release fuse. When mine didn't open, this fuse was blown.

was your gas cap on correctly when you finally got the door open?
I let my brother borrow my car a while back and he didnt put the cap on right, whcih caused the fuel door to stick. i had to use the emrgency cable to open it but everything has been fine since.
Looked all over mine and can not find the tab or the wire. Any pictures of where it should be?
Thanks
In my FRC it's in the trunk compartment and I have to pop open the trunk to get to it. It's located up high around the wheel well, and if I recall correctly, it's tucked behind a carpet panel. It's not easy to find if you're looking for it for the first time.
it is connected... but i'm just wondering if it's the button or the harness or the fuse... typically what is it... and how can i determine what the problem is?

Take a look at egypt123 post #11 in this thread, item #2.
I had a similar problem and turned out to be a non-connected gas switch -- when I changed out my AC/heater module (below the stereo) somehow the cable disconnected. The switch itself is less than ~$20 if I recall. I would recommend to check that first before the fuse.
If you've ever had your center console apart (shifter installation?), maybe the wire(s) got pinched or the connector damaged.
My fuel fill door would periodically not open with the switch, but I could hear it clicking. I pulled the manual release and checked for corrosion/broken spring that others have sometimes reported. There was none and the fuse was not blown.
I lightly lubed both the plunger and the end of the fuel fill door where it connects with the plunger (with white lithium). That solved the problem. However, to much lithium results in the fuel fill door opening at the most inopportune times.
