The little 9v batteries that hook into a cig lighter.
I've got a lot of tuning into my head unit and don't want to lose it when I take my battery out.
The ones I have seen in Eckler's and Mid-America say they are not for use on a C5. Probably too much current drain for all of the systems that need electrcial power all the time. And 9V may not be enough voltage.
I guess it depends on why you're taking the battery out...but f you have a battery charger, just clip the positive lead to the alternator post (the large terminal under the rubber boot), negative to a good ground, then remove the battery. You won't lose any power.
The 9V battery "memory savers" will not harm your C5/Z06 electronics.
I can tell you from personal experience, even a fresh 9v battery will not last but maybe a 3-4 of hours of use. It's quickly drawn down.
I use one when I have my battery disconnected, although it's probably not necessary. The radio in my '04 Z16 seems to retain memory w/o the "saver" when the 12v is disconnected...whereas, in my previous '96 Impala SS, the memory would be lost unless I used the device. There must have been improvements in that area over the decade.
I noticed that too. Changed the battery last night in the AE, the clock reset, but all pre-sets and seat mmpry where still there. Depends on what you are doing and how long I guess.
3-4 hours is fine... I would only need to use it for a few minutes.
I was worried about the low voltage freaking out the computers.
Thanks.
That's how I used mine the first time when I got my Z16 to get rid of the AC DELCO battery and install the OPTIMA. I used it a couple of times since then for longer periods.
I recall reading that my '96 Impala SS computer(s) didn't "talk" to each other as the later models (C5/Z06) do...maybe that's why it's not really necessary to use one (?)...the memories are not lost.
Maybe member Bill Curlee has an answer to the question...
do you lose the tune when your battery is out? I have changed my battery with a pro charger tune and there is no difference. Are you sure you lose the tune?

No, you do not lose the tune when you remove your battery.
The only way to "lose the tune" is to have it re-programmed.
What you will lose by disconecting the battery is your learned idle, fuel trims and adaptive shift patterns if your an auto, but all of these will re-learn themselves after a couple hours of driving.
