And you could find out a lot more if you PM forum member Sponge Vette with your VIN. He can run it through GMVIS and get you all of the service and origination history. It's pretty cool to find out who the originating dealer is, and what service history has been put through GM on the car.

Could you explain how to go about this? It sounds real interesting. I bought from a one owner and did a car fax but was clean
Running your car through GMVIS shows your all of your service records, as well as the original dealership came from, and that sort of thing. I know that it can show you if your car is a lemon or not, but i'm not to familiar with much else then that.

Just as I indicated above - send a private message to Sponge Vette and ask him to run your VIN. He has been doing this as a service to his brothers and sisters here on the Forum for many years. He will either send you a return PM with the information or sometimes he's been known to simply respond in a thread with the information.
All I can say is Sponge Vette is a real asset to the forum, and collectively we owe him big! I'll buy the first round....
Thank you for the this piece of important information. Is there any way to discern the transmission from the VIN? I have followed up with other sources and it does not seem to be that easily to determine unless you look at th engine block information. Is this truly the case, or is this information embedded in the codes for the VIN?

No. The VIN does not contain that information.
It's listed on the RPO code sticker that's usually located on the inside of the glove box cover, or on the back side of a rear storage compartment cover. The M code on the RPO sticker is relevant to the transmission type.
MM6 or MN6 for manual transmissions, and MX0 for automatic transmission.
