Default How Much Does Cold Air Effect HP

With a cold air intake on a C5 how much does it affect you? I've noticed a very big difference from the common 15 degree temps in the winter in Kansas and the 100+ temps in the summer.

So how much of a difference does it make?

Sorry I made a mistake here...Im human too. its 1.5 % for every 10 degrees this is the % used to calculate corrected and uncorrected dyno numbers.,..For C5's

My car is an absolute beast in cold weather. Tires are a different story though

So is might and its not FI. The same went for the LT1 camaro I had, it just seems like it has so much more power in the cold especially when going onto and onramp when you have traction.

Must be an illusion...

Interesting, here is published research...

HP Output =
+1% HP per 10 degree temperature decrease

-1% HP per 10 degree temperature increase

One source here...(google is your friend)

http://www.banzairunnerpantera.com/t...techinfo_calcs

and a calculator so you do can do you own analysis

http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_hp_dp.htm

It's more about the density of the air and temp is only one factor of density.

But I guess when you feel it...nothing else matters

Of course it's going to be a percentage.

I assure you my 5hp snowblower on a 30 degree day does not make 10hp on a 0 degree day.

Since this is the C5 forum, it is safe to assume a 700hp blown C5 packing the cylinders with more of that oxygen-rich air will develop proportionally more hp gain in cold weather than the stock 345hp car will in the same conditions.

Volumetric efficiency is not a constant. Think about it....

I can feel a huge difference in cool weather in comparison to our typical hot temps in Phx.

Default Only know this................

I only know that with my trubo charged '87 Grand National that two (2)degrees of temp drop ( out of the inter/outer cooler) add one (1) hp over ambient temps.

Peter you are correct. the engine loves cold air 50-55* but the pavement is too cold, and the tires are too cold so there is minimal grip.

Simple terms:

40 degrees = 10.30's
90 degrees = 10.90's

That was on my car! lost about 4-5 mph

Do you take in account the temperature sent by the IAT Sensor or is this 1.5% value an SAE outside temperature value?

This amounts to over 35hp from the dead of winter to the hottest months in summer (Kansas).

Another factor to consider is altitude. My snow blower came with a blurb that said it would lose a little over 2% of its horsepower for every 1,000 feet of elevation over sea level. Considering it's only 10 HP and we are at 7,000 feet it ain't got de horses it needs here in the deep snow so we modified the intake and exhaust. It did make a difference. It affects my vert also to the extent you can tell it.
