I'm changing plugs and wires (I'm new to the C5 generation). My question is ,is there any trick to getting the metal boot guards off? The compartment is tight and kinda hard to see them, and seems it is the first step to get the guards off before trying to get the boots off the plugs. My FRC is going to in the Valvoline dyno display at the Gateway Nationals this weekend and I want it running good!!
tmqdoc1 posted this a while ago. I'm planning this job for the weekend so I dug this out
Well I'll tell you how I finally removed the wires and hopefully this will help you. With the back drivers plug make sure you rotate the hose on the front of the big black thing ... Brake master? .... clockwise to move it out of your way. Also, disconnect the plug from the coil first. You will see a metal cylinder surrounding the plug wire. This a heat shield do not bend it. With very long pair of pliers or long channel lock pliers you can grasp the cylinder gently and push it towards the motor leaving more exposed plug wire. Now especially with the drivers side there is not a lot of room to pull, rotate, or move the wire back and forth to loosen it. IMPORTANT. Therefore, I grasped as large a portion of the plug and possible and while holding it tightly placed a large long straight screwdriver into the top of the rubber plug and pried the plug wire away from the motor. It take a little time but my wires were so tight it was the only way I could remove them. The passenger side was removed with only a small channel lock pliers twisting and turning as I pulled away from the motor.
Be carefull not to pull on the wire itself. If you can't get fingers on the plug boot, then use either a pair of needle nose pliars or a screw driver to help pull on the boot.
You'll just need to pull on the rubber boot to get these off. They will come off with the boot and then you can slide them off easily.
Here is a good link with instructions for changing spark plugs. I did the easiest one first so that I could figure out how. I had spark plug boot pliers, but they were useless for me.
The guards do not come off until the wire is off the plug, when I did mine I just pulled, some were easy, some were not but they all came off fine.

THANKS GUYS!!! This was THE main point of the question,,ALL the tips are helpful as I'm an OLD shade tree mechanic!! This tight of quarters and metal heat shield are foreign to me. Ive built an swapped motors, trannies and rebuilt the rear suspension of my shark. But the engine compartment of a C5 is all new territory!!! Many thanks again,,,OFF I GO to finish up the project--Started yesterday drained the trans, differential.Sucked out the master cylinders for brakes and clutch (man were they NASTY!!!) In the clean up process noticed the front inner pads were getting thin so I'm going to have the rotors cleaned up and throwing some semimet ceramics on as well!! GETTING TO KNOW HER the hard way!! Thanks again for the tips!!

The OEM wires are VERY fragile especially after a couple years. Sneeze on them, and you'll separate the wire from the plug connection...
