Default TPS not working

Got the vett out yesterday and the left rear tire pressure sensor is not working. Checked the air and the gauge said 29lbs. Is there a battery or something in them that needs replaced or does the whole thing need replaced? Seems like the whole thing should not go bad just sitting all winter. Thanks , Jim

with Oak. I got mine from Gene. Better replace all of them while you're at it. They are all at about the end of their life span.

With the cost of pulling the tire, just replace the sensor and rest easy

The sensors last 7-10 years so that's about right for a failure. The bad news is that the other 3 are about to fail so you may want to bite the bullet now. make sure you get a sensor for a 99

You checked the sensors after you drove a bit, right.

I have a 97 with 66,000 miles. Had one senor go out a few years back, I only replaced the one. The other 3 are still going strong. I'm kinda proud of them 11 years!!! One of the 3 originals is a little slower to come up than the rest. I think I'm going to change the batteries on the 3 when I put on my new michelin's. I'm on borrowed time from what others say.

I'm surprised that no one suggested that the OP attempt to train the sensor that is out before replacing it. It may just need to be initiated.

Waddaya think folks?

that is possible , but i have never seen one that has lost it's memory unless the tire has been off the wheel so that is why i said new sensor , but it would be worth a shot

You do have to drive it a while to wake them up, then if they don't try to retrain, if that doesn't work www.gmpartshouse.com

Kinda scared me for a second there. I have one that is asleep but that tire has been on and off the car a few times. I've got to get a magnet so that I can retrain it. The stupid dealer retrained all of mine a year ago and they have the sides backwards.

I loath stupid dealerships.

I agree....

Try resetting it first, get the magnet out and run them all through the procedure through the DIC.

This costs nothing and if it works, spend your stimulus check on other mods!

Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Programming

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system interfaces with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) through the serial data line. Once the program mode is accessed through the IPC, each sensor's unique identification code can be programmed into the receiver's memory. Each sensor must transmit the unique code in the proper sequence. A magnet must be held close to the sensor in order to force the sensor to transmit the identification code. The IPC will display a message as each sensor is programmed, and when to proceed to the next sensor for programming. The receiver also sends a message to the BCM to sound the horn one time, indicating that the sensor properly transmitted an identification code. If the programming sequence is cancelled before any sensor is programmed, or if the vehicle's battery is disconnected, the receiver will remember all current identification codes. As soon as the receiver learns the first sensor identification code, all previously stored codes are erased from the receiver's memory.

Tool required (any medium strength magnet, U or Disk type)

The official GM tool is (J 41760) Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Programming Tool.

1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.
3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
Notice: Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Cautions and Notices.
5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the TIRE TRAINING message appears.
6. Press the RESET button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin
the programming sequence.
7. Install the J 41760 Tire Pressure Programming Tool over the left front valve stem.
8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed
by the IPC messages:
- LEARN R FRONT TIRE
- LEARN R REAR TIRE
- LEARN L REAR TIRE
Programming Cancellation
1. The programming mode will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are met: - The program mode is exited through the DIC.
- The ignition is turned to OFF.
- All four sensors have been programmed.
- The TPM system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no sensors
have been learned.
2. If the program mode is cancelled with less than four codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.

the j41760 i use is actually my magnetized parts cup

when i got my tires replaced last week , they told me to bring the car back for progrmming the sensors , i laughed and said i can handle it they already ruined my wheel si was not taking the vette in

Yep, I have this...I just don't have the magnet. Now if you could find some way to post the magnet, I swear I'll post it back to you...

Well I reprogramed my TPS'S yesterday. The bad one did not reset but I do have another question. Do you buy a left rear one , a left front one,a right rear one and a right front one? The reason I ask is the right rear did not reset but it shows 30lbs on the dic and the left rear reset and shows xxxx's. Could they be reversed and the right rear be bad?

I used an old speaker magnet AJ. Try one from an old hard drive. Any strong magnet will do.
