Exhaust, Exhaust manifolds, CAI, lowering, tune, wheels, minor interior and exterior mods. Case closed . These cars are very potent from the box, so they don't need much outside some personal touches.
What exactly is the column-lock bypass and CAGS eliminator? Is the CAGS for 6-speed cars only?
CAGS is refering skip shift that GM put on the cars for fuel economy reasons. VERY annoying, forces you to go from 1st to 4th gear by locking out 2nd and 3rd. This (the eliminator) was the first on my mod list and for less than $20... why not. On the other hand, alot of guys never even notice its there since they drive their cars like they stole them anyways. The column lock is in reference to relplacing an item in the steering column for which there is a factory recall on the cars as well, also a must on the list of fixes/mods. I'll let someone else speak in more detail on this one since I am not overly familiar with it(car came with this fix already installed when I purchased it).
BTW, for me the next non-performance item to go would be the stock shifter, for what ever its worth. That being said, going from a C4 to a C5 I think you'll be quite pleased. You might just want to drive it around and see what is a "must have" for you, the list is different for most all of us no doubt. For what its worth, one of the major highlights of my week is crusing and playing in my C5, you will not regret going this route stock or modified!!!
Come on.....sounds like some people don't know need from want.
Anyway, my list and reasons:
1. Do something with the column lock to make sure you don't get stuck with a locked wheel like I did. Either a CLB or the latest dealer fix taking out the lock plate.
2. CAGS eliminator. $20 fix and it's really annoying as it comes from the factory.
3. Skid plate stiffeners so you don't scrape the cage going up a driveway. $40.
4. Some good car care products to protect your car. I won't start an argument on brands.
5. An extra key. $20.

Everything else is a "want to have"!
Actually, I have to admit... he probably got us all with the "must haves". Good call Ryan!!!
The oil bypass catch can really reduced the dirt on my exhaust tips. Also if you have chrome wheels, ceramic brake pads really reduce the dust on them as well.
Only other real bang for the buck mods I ever did were the Z06 sway bars and gears in the A4.
Rest were just personal preference appearance stuff or little to no performance impact compared to those two.
How hard is the install for this? What should I expect to pay for it?
Also, I see brass headlight gears mentioned frequently...
Wher do I get them? Why do I want them?? How hard are they to install and what do they cost?
Ecklers, Zip-Products, Mid-America Motorworks, etc. should all sell brass headlight gears. I think it costs about $50 per light, $100 total.
The factory headlight gears are made of nylon and can wear out over time. Personally, I would just wait until the headlights start to malfunction. Why fix something that's not broken? You may not have a problem with your factory gears for years to come.
