I second the painters tape idea. As far as why its bleeding, I'm not sure about that. When I do stencil work with tape, especially over base colors that haven't been cleared yet, I rub the sticky side of masking tape on my pants a couple of times and it usually picks up some linen fibers and other stuff. This makes the tape "not so sticky" so that it won't lift the base I'm putting it on. There is nothing worse than having something taped and not being able to get the tape or masking off to see what you have done, lol...
I would definitely paint these from the back side or on the inside, instead of the outside. Kind of like how the RC car guys do it. They have clear lexan or plastic bodies for their cars, and they paint them from the inside so that the paint holds up. I would imagine that it would be more durable in this situation. Nothing wrong with painting something on the outside, but the elements and repeated washings may make it start to look bad. If you had it painted from the inside you wouldn't be able to get that flat or satin look (if that's what you're after), but it would be waaaay more durable. I have never tried to take my back up lights off so I don't know what that involves. I think I saw where you said it was kind of a pain to get to the back of them. If you can get them off, I would do it from the back.
Great idea though man, that looks really cool. I'm not really a jake fan, but I'm sure I might could come with something to stencil there.

I would have done it from the inside as I have a nitro truck and know how to paint them. The backup lights are diamond cut and you can't get inside other than through the quarter-size light socket so there is no good way to paint the inside of the lights.
Nice work, but I hate to say I think it looks ricey -- But that's just my $02. Keep in mind that 99.9% of the people behind you at a light will not know what the Jake thing is, and they'll just see skulls on a Vette.
