The Vram is a great intake,, I just had one installed. You will not pick up 40 HP with it, on the stock tune. If you take it and have it professionlly tuned, you might get 20-30 HP depending on your particular car and how good your tuner is. Air intake mods are great, but are even better when you start adding Headers. cams and other things.
Still, yes, a very good first mod regardless. Good starting point.
Your point is well taken. I've been thinking about the first mods that I can do to my C5 and exhaust is at the top the list. Specifically, LG Motorsports long tube headers, catted x pipe and cat back exhaust. I'm betting I'll get better gains off the line, than a ram air system, which probably doesn't pick up much horsepower until highway speeds.
I have a new Mustang with gears and it really gets off the line much better than my C5 with an A4. I need more power at lower RPM!
Gears on a C5 are tempting and obviously a great mod, but gas mileage is going to drop, just like it did on my Mustang. Exhaust and air intakes (when driven conservatively!) might pick up a little gas mileage. I'm starting to really appreciate the highway mileage of a C5, especially with gas at $4 a gallon.

Actually that's not entirely true. Most people (myself included) have found that the Vararam gives them better performance even at low speeds. I believe the stock intake just chokes the engine of air by so much that even when you're travelling at low speeds and not getting the full "ram effect" it's still a huge difference over the stock setup.
