Snakes n Vettes
CF member Roscoe118 (George) and our wifes went for a nice cruise the the Texas hill country. We ended up at Doc's Seafood Restaurant in Marble Falls. We had a nice dinner. We had parked our cars on the side away from all the other cars.
Walking back to the car, I saw a pick up truck parked behind my car and figured someone was up to no good. We got a little closer and found several young girls gathered around George's car. As we got closer they said there was a snake under the car.
Sure enough, a snakes head just just in front of the drivers side rear tire. Not knowing what kind of snake it was, George was a little nervous to just climb in the car.
So he got a stick and prodded it out. It was none too happy.
Pardon the poor quality pics. It was from my camera phone and it was dark.

From the pic quality it is hard to tell but that might have been a copperhead! It looked to light in color between markings but like I said I couldn't really tell. Did it have a triangle shaped head?

I didn't look. George got a better look. Maybe he can chime in. It was coiled up and ready to strike. It wasn't very big but we didn't want to take any chances. Docs is right on the river/lake LBJ area.

You got me thinking now. Usually snakes just take off. This bad boy wasn't afraid at all and was poised to strike.

A lot of snakes in your area fake the strike thing as a self defense action. Copperheads don't get much bigger than the one in your pic. Don't mess with any of them though. Just let them be and they usually will do the same!
I had someone that was familiar with snakes take a look at the pictures. He said it was definitely in the Colubridae family and not from the Viperidae family, and most likely a rat snake. Luckily, a non-venomous snake!

Thanks for the info.
We just prompted it to go away so we could leave. I would have felt bad had it been poisonous and I let it go in a populated area.

I have a black and yellow striped snake that has lived in my yard the last 5 or so years. I don't bother him and he doesn't bother me. I almost ran him over with the lawn mower accidentally once.
