The downshift is controlled by a few things. The speed and RPM and the newly selected throttle position. I had all of my upshift points raised in the RPM range and the downshifts points lowered on the RPM range. Need to have a Tuning shop set it up for you, or get a hand held device that will allow you to do this. I have it done on my A4 as well, works just fine, even in the twisties I keep up well with Mn6's...
Changing shift points wont hurt MPG, unless you USE it to the Max all the time. Meaning, unless you wana floor it all the time, or want fast pick ups most of the time. Other than that, the car will drive normally.
How to figure out the shift points? Well there are many guys on the forum who can send you their shift points info, you can just copy that. I have one too, but my laptop is down these days Put up a question on the forum about shift points and you'll get tons of replies. Or just go to the search for "shift points".
