Default Hydrolocked engine update

Original Post:

Just brought a 2008 Fatboy and needed to free up garage space. So I took my 2001 MINT, 30,000 mile C5 to my sisters house to store for a few weeks.

Well my nephew (18) took my car for an unauthorized ride. He drove it through a deep puddle and yes he hydrolocked the motor.

It was made worse because he said they tried numerous times to push start it.

Now I need advice and help. The car is in Long Island and needs to get towed to a dealer. Anybody on Long Island that you guys can recommend? Plus any idea of the cost involved? Would this be a good time to upgrade to a different motor and if so, what one?

Please help a man in distress at the moment

Thanks,

Bobby A

Most recent update:

Last week I drove out to Vette Doctors and saw Carmine. Left him with a check for 5G to get started. We sat down and went over some details and numbers and this is what he came up with.

$9800 for a new LS1. This will be paid for by my nephew. I will be putting in an LS6 with headers ($1700) and a mild cam. He will clean out the engine compartment also.

The total will be around $13,000. So I am shelling out $3200 for the upgrades.

Does this sound reasonable? I have never been in a position like this. The shop looks awesome and he has a lot of business. But like I said, this is new to me.

Regardless, I am already committed and I guess I am looking for some solace (?) because of all that went on with the car.

Opinions please..

Thats a ton of money for a LS1 or even a LS6, a 408 can be had for 5 grand plus install costs. Heck a LOW mile LS1 can be had for under $2,000. You have a few options with it but if the total is 13 grand I def would not have another LS1 in my car

Hi Bobby -

I have heard nothing but good things about the Vette Doctors.

You are in good hands , and that sounds in the ballpark.

best regards -

I agree. That sounds like a bunch of green. I would do some more research before comitting to that kind of price. Plus, kick your nephew in the *** everytime you see him. It will help you feel better!

For that price you could have gone with a forged LS2 403 stroker.

Sorry.

WoW! !

First of all...........That will teach your nephew a lesson! ! ! I hope he has a good job to pay $10,000.00

On the other hand, For $13,000.00 you can get a lot mor Motor than an LS6 with Headers and cam! !

Talk to Vette Doctors for other options! !

FYI

I just purchased a New 408 with all new internals, All ARP Studs, New Ported Patriot Stage 3 Heads, ECS Cam, New Oil pump, New timing chain, all new gaskets for less than $7,000.00

EPP does forged motor rebuilds for $5700 I believe, and you would only pay extra for cam parts not install. That much for an LS1 is CRAZY.

That's a pile of money. Try this for pricing -

OK everyone stand by. From the responses it would seem that they are overcharging me. However allot of the responses are about the LS1 price. The 9800 was for the complete install of a new LS1.

The job I am having done is for a new LS6 with headers and a cam, (and whatever else comes along with that , valve springs etc?)

The place is totally professional and they have allot of Corvettes there being worked on.

The price is for the completed job. Parts and labor. Plus a dyno tune.

They know that I am an NYPD Detective and they have friends on the job whose cars they have worked on. My instincts about them tell me they are professional.

HOWEVER I have never had a job of this magnitude done before. I was hoping that the price is fair and I am positive it will come out fine.

I have heard nothing but good things about Vette Doctors and hope that this is fair.

Please advise of anything I should ask or should need to know.

Thanks for the replies,

Bobby A

Seeing as it is out of pocket why not look for a good take out LS1 or LS6? Even though your nephew is paying that is a ton of money to put into that car that you will never recoup. What was actually damaged? I would think just a new long or take out long block would do the trick as well.

Wow re the cost for a LS1

Something is amiss with this pricing.

Shop around

EDIT:

I have read your last post re this is a complete swap cost.

Even so: the cost (installed) for a LPE 427 is less than $20k, a 382 less than $16k.

Take a look at the FS Parts section. Often there are motors (built ones) that are better, IMO, costs than the replacement LS1.

The kid has problems and making him pay for what he did should (?) teach him a lesson. If not, I am sure he will be running into some trouble with the law somewhere down the road.

Collar my nephew for taking my car without me knowing about it, I don't think so.

The car had a cracked block, the starter was hanging off, water was dripping from everywhere. Even at the shop I put my hand into the intake and it was still wet inside.

The kid tried to push start it numerous time compounding the damage.

It is a complete engine swap. Any salvageable parts I suppose could be sold to someone who needed them.

Maybe thats why the price is high.

That's way too much money for a stock motor (LS6). You can get a forged LS2 motor for cheaper.

You need to find some friends that spin a wrench. For $13K I would have a forged 402 with the works.

Headers are about $1700 bucks. Install should be free as they have the motor out already.

I would stop and shop around. An LS6 crate motor is around $5,700 dollars.

Slow down and do some research.

It sounds like a lot of money, but it includes the labor and a few add ons. At least the original poster's nephew is stepping up for pay for the largest portion.

Way too much. Check out the new LS3 you'd have to change out the relucter wheel but it's only 6300.00. They also have new LS2's for 5600.00. David
